If your UK phone is unlocked you can get a Vodafone PAYG sim on their new Pay as You Go 1 option which gives you calls, texts and 500mb of data each day - but you can spend only a maximum of £1 a day.
Turkey is included in their list of included European countries (it isn't on any of the other major network providers).
So there you have it - 500mb a day for £7 a week
If you reach 500mb in a day, you can buy another 500mb to use up till midnight in the same day for £1.

That is really useful information, Scunner.
Thank you.
I got "done" with something called "roaming charges" a while back and haven't ever fully understood how that all worked out.
This sounds simple enough, I think.
What happens to the existing phone number? I'm something of a technophobe when it comes to mobile phones.
-
I once got charged £5 for connecting to an Austrian network for 7 seconds - when I was in an Easyjet above it at 30,000ft :D
With your usual sim/number you might just leave it dormant while you are on holiday (I do) but if you need to have it live (to receive calls, texts) then you would need to carry two phones. Or one phone with two sims (they do exist :) )
-
That's brilliant.
Thank you.
-
Anytime
As I recall, if your usual sim sits alone for a week or two and people leave voicemails/texts, you pick them all up once you put it back in the phone after your hols. But someone else might be able to confirm/advise there.
-
I have a spare, older Nokia I can put the vodafone sim into and also take my posh Samsung (that I barely understand).
-
Lots of Huawei handsets are dual SIM, I've got the model before this one and it works a treat with my UK and Spanish SIM cards.

Stupid question John but do they work together or you switch between sims?
-
Both active at the same time. When making a call or text you get the option of what SIM to use - it's pretty intuitive and easy to manage.

Thank you Scunner - Brilliant information.
I was aware of Vodophone's "Big Bundles" but had missed this PAYG1 system of theirs which will work better for us on shortish visits. Just £1 a day maximum and only when you use it - phone free days are free!. Result!
THANK YOU!!!
-
Belated thanks for this info. I've just sent for one of these sims as I think it's perfect for hols.
-
Just seen this in today’s paper. Hopefully getting a twin sim from China when my son comes home from Bangkok in May. I might just order a sim and use it in Calis this year. Seems a much cheaper option than using my current plan on plusnet.
-
Thanks to this thread just bought a £20 bundle 10gb unlimited minutes etc. Brilliant!
-
This looks like a good option as I am expecting my Turkish phone and sim I leave in Turkey will most likely have been blocked following the new rules. Just a couple of quick questions. If I order one of these sims, will I be supplied with a new phone number? Does the sim have to be activated in Uk and just one more, do the minutes etc only start when you start using it?
-
1. Yes you get a new sim with a new number (you can port a number to the sim if you wanted to)
2. I think you just need to activate it - I've always done so in the UK but don't think it has to be
3. Yes once you start using it rather than when they despatch or when you receive it.
A Pay as you go sim is also a good plan these days too - you can add a £10 top up and your maximum cost is £1 per day (500mb data a day /15gb a month + unlimited minutes + texts). You only pay the £1 a day on days you use your phone so ideal for low level users too.

Thanks Keith for the clarification. I'll be getting one to put in my old unlocked phone very soon.

Just to throw a spanner in the works there is also Voxi which is part of vodafone and looks a better deal.i am on the vodafone double bundle but Voxi is better.
Also when connected to certain apps its free of charge

Voxi is a good deal for social media types Charles but the pay as you go option on Vodafone is great for people who aren't heavy or even everyday users.
Voxi and Vodafone are actually the same price for 30 day non-contract access - 6GB for a tenner with unlimited minutes/texts. Voxi better for the social media side if that is what you use.
-
Agree keith if your not a heavy user vodafone payg is great.
Was just thinking if anybodys going away for 3 or 4 weeks the voxi 30 day gives you more gb's for £15 or £20.
-
i agree, I'm thinking about Voxi £10 deal for the girls - while the data offer is the same as Vodafone right now (6Gb for £10) youngsters use social media more than everything else put together so those being free on Voxi is a great offer.
It would be great if we were on Vodafone in the UK anyway, and just take your own phone/sim to Turkey and use as you would at home - never seems to work out that way - I'm on Virgin Mobile, family two on BT and one on Three.
-
Just a quick update. Called into Vodafone shop yesterday and they have a new deal which suited me better https://www.vodafone.co.uk/mobile/pay-as-you-go-plans/big-value-bundles?cid=ppc-wvm/pg/_71700000031190390_/prch/an&cid=ppc&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgaP_2qqp3wIVAeh3Ch3etwq0EAAYASAAEgIhI_D_BwE
I chose the £10 bundle which is perfect and cheaper than the original package. 250 mins of talk is plenty for a 3 week stay 👍👍
-
Thanks chris, will look into that, sounds ideal for me.

What is the latest on mobiles in Turkey.
Our family all on O2 their daily plan of £4.99 per day kicks as soon as make a text, call use wifi which works out expensive.
We need a cheap option to text mom in law in uk and make occasional call to her.
Any recommendations for 2/3 wks cover please.
