Title: Overheard in Hisaronu
Post by: KKOB on August 01, 2013, 17:47:43 PM
A few yers ago Mrs KKOB and I were making one of our very rare visits to Hiroshima and were having a drink in one of the restaurants near the mosque on the main drag.

As we were sitting there the Iman began the call to prayer and, at the top of her voice, a woman on an adjoining table said to her companion "You'd think they'd ban 'em from making that **ckin' row during the holiday season, wouldn't ya"

Priceless.

That brings back memories when we had our first holiday in Oludeniz over 15 years ago we were sitting at breakfast  and we overheard a couple complaining to a waiter about the 'racket' they heard at 5 am   ...bloody noise do we have to put up with that every morning  ???

I've also heard many of these comments over the years in Hisaronu I suppose that's why you can't get a decent Turkish meal in the strip now lol !!

When in Hisaronu at Booty.  i got talking a couple of ladies. One was very excited to show me a picture on her phone.  It was a full English she had just eaten at Del Boys and said she was going to show everyone back in England the size of the breakfast..
Also in Ovacik in June got talking to the English lady whose husband owned a restaurant.  She asked one of the kitchen staff for something and got quite annoyed and then turned to us and said.  The trouble with the people here is they can't speak English".

KKOB, we heard very similar in Bodrum a few years ago, makes me just despair, I don't understand the mentality of these people.

I honestly believe there is a 'holiday mentality', a real chemical hormone brain change. They can do what they want, say what they want, eat what they want, drink what and how much they want, treat people how they want, disregard respect and consideration because they are on their 'much earned needed hard worked for holiday and no one or nothing is going to get in their way.
It ranges from the ignorance of the way of life in the country they are visiting to practical thing like using other peoples belongings ie sun loungers and inflatables on private complexes and drinking out of glasses and bottles in the pool because "Hey what does it matter, chill out we're on holiday"

People are just people and some are nicer than others.

KKOB `s  post is  unfortunately indicative of a  type of people ( growing in numbers )  visiting Hisaronu these days .. particularly in July and August .. one of the reasons we prefer it in the months before and after those months living there. A turkish friend  of 10 years who owns a very successful restaurant in H  even said to us recently..   " I have seen a big change in the type of visitors to H  over recent years "    without sounding snobbish I  know exactly what he was trying to say .

said without any prejudice towards anyone at all,  I think Hisaronu is a great place to sit and  observe our society, (as in British). Fascinating.

Quote from sleuth:-

"without sounding snobbish I  know exactly what he was trying to say" .

Pretty much what I'm trying to say too, without digging a hole!!

I enjoy `people watching`  ;)
Angela, but there are certain `observations` in H  I  can do without  :o

Overheard in Kayakoya "What a mess, wouldn't you think the council would do something?"

Angela, you've dug the hole, I'll happy jump into it with both feet. I just wince with embarassment when I see the behaviour & attitude of some of our (unfortunately fellow) countrymen. They don't really want to be in Turkey, they want to be in Magalluf, but because of the Euro, the booze is too expensive, so they dump themselves in H because if they close their eyes at night on the main drag, that's exactly where they are !!! Unfortunately the average tourist is expected to tolerate their boorish behaviour &  some of the bar owners don't help either. Won't be long before it get the sames reputation as Faliraki has been trying to shake off for years now.  You (H) reap what you sow !! I suspect this will not be my final word on the subject.

Are you sure?

As a regular visitor to Spain I can assure you that the price of alcohol is far less than Turkey, especially for wine and spirits.  Even in Madrid (capital city syndrome) I can still drink cheaper than in Turkey.   Mind you, if all you want to do is swill Efes at 5tl a bottle I'm sure it'd work out cheaper in Turkey...

I stand by my last post.  The comparison was not just the price of booze, but the type of tourist. Not every tourist drinks just Efes in (H) anymore than Rioja in Magalluf and while I take your point about the price, I think H and Magalluf are pretty much on par, given the amount of competition for business.Your point about the cost of wines & spirits. Turkey, a muslim country outside of the EU, unlike Spain, has to import nearly all it's branded spirits and does not have a worldwide market for it's wine, hence the cost . None of this however, excuses the behaviour & ignorance of a minority getting a resort a poor reputation & embarassing the majority.

There is of course another side to some of these boorish observations, the Turkish businesses are only too happy to take the money off these holidaymakers.  So if the Turks do not have a problem, in their own country, why should you?  Yes they may be making ill informed or even ignorant comments, but come on is that really a reason for denigrating them, and Hissy?  I think not.  They are probably very nice people, and I suspect people who return home a little wiser about Turkey, it's customs and life... They may even get a new perspective on some of their sniffy fellow Brits.    ;)

An outstanding act of diplomacy there Usebustickets. If only you were right, but I somehow doubt it. It's not sniffy or snobbish to expect people to respect other tourists, or Turks for that matter. You're right though. They don't need me to denigrate them or the resort. They are both doing a pretty good job themselves.

That's funny, because Spain has to import its non domestic branded spirits also, and the lack of an export market isn't what's pushed the price of wine up - its the same factor that's made all alcohol expensive in Turkey and that is the recent tax hikes, both sales and import.

I like Hisaronu.  I've only ever passed through it and would not consider spending any time there - but I still like it.  Answers on the back of an Efes label as to why.

Read recently in `First Choice Holidays` brochure.....  very small article relating to Hisaronu ( not really recognised as as a major resort in Turkey hence the small coverage,)     it simply reads..... "  If you want karaoke, drag acts, and foam parties Hisaronu is the place to stay, just walk down the main street there at night  and follow the noise "    sadly  that  description is spot on       :(    at least being back in the UK  for july and august ( back to H at the end of august )  we dont see the worst of it thankfully.  Much better there early and late in the season , and even better in March / April .

Some people come to Hisaronu as it has a busy nightlife, and also as the town  has the advantage of  a regular  dolmus  service from where they can go to Kaya, OluDeniz, Ovacik and Fethiye for variety, as each of these resorts has it's own character.  Some of them love to try the local food, some, prefer a pizza or fish and chips.  And many of us (I am one of them,) can find a particularly daft comment coming out of the mouth.   They are on holiday, that is all.

I think if people want to eat pizza and chips every day on holiday it's up to them (gasp).
