The ruling AKP government has removed all school principals in Turkey who completed four years in their duty and replaced them with pro-government teachers.

More detail on the dismissal of 7,000 principals based on contentious performance evaluation tests that were suspected of being politically motivated and aimed at removing members of unions not supportive of AKP.

I wouldn't describe this as "the start of the cull", but more a logical progression (in the Islamists eyes) of what has been happening over the past 8/9mths. The removal of secularists and good, honest and professional educators is not unexpected given the religious agenda within the education system in Turkey. Unfortunately, its not just the teachers that have been targeted, but students as well:

And the new Prime Minister to be today announced that he intends to put right 90 years of damage to the Turkish Republic.
Would those be the Ataturk years. ?
-
What is the agenda then?
1. Taking away women's right to education and voting.
2. Abolition of surnames.
3. Reverting to arabic script (my avatar has already made this change).
4. Returning to a population that is less than 10% literate (#3 should help with that).
5. Using the arabic hijri calendar = today is DAY Wednesday 1st, MONTH Thw al-Qi`dah, YEAR 1435 A.H.
6. All men to wear the fez (that should stimulate the poorly performing clothing industry).
7. And, eventually, abolition of the "Republic" itself.
I'm sure other can add some missing items. But I can't see any of this being a problem for British holidaymakers and expats.

I'm speechless :'(
What has religion got to do with educating the next generation.
Shame on him and his sheep followers
-
Erdogan has said he wants schools to educate a whole generation of pious youth. So that's what he thinks religion has to do with education - and he is busily making it happen (he hopes).

Thanks for the link John, she says in a suitably deferential and hushed tone, averting eyes while simultaneously blushing ;D

Get back in the kitchen woman. !!

So do the past 90 years include the last ten?
Quote "The new program does not aim to regress 90 years back but rather seeks to repair the republic, democracy, foreign policy and a model of the economy that has been “injured” for the past 90 years"

Aye right... we should just move your post to the jokes section now.
But seriously, the way things are done in regions like Erzurum or Ağrı is what they want. Lets all be pious and make sure our little women know their place both in the family and society in general. Child brides, regular beatings, rape and honour killings that go unpunished... and he calls it restoration.
The Gülenists had also batten down the hatches, they're all in for a rough ride too.
In fact, anyone other than a pious, semi literate, male, AK supporter is in for a hard time over the short to medium term in Turkey.

I sincerely hope the electorate see things differently
-
The Electorate will no doubt agree that it is ok for the Dictator to cast their vote for them.
Soon it will no longer be ISIL but ISILIT (Including Turkey).
Islamists don't fear a "Holy" War, they WANT one!

I do hope that the people rightly throwing their hands up in horror at these changes in education in Turkey, are also as concerned about education in UK too. In case people haven't noticed there has been increasing control by religious organisations in UK education too. Rejuvinated in recent years by the Labour Party- to its eternal shame - led by St. Tony of Blair, a religious nutter like Reg, but continued on by the present Con-Dem government too.
So as well as the 'traditional' state schools for Jews, CoE, R.C and Methodists, we can add to that a growing list of various intolerant, backward looking organisations such as Happy Clappy Christian fundamentalists, Seven Day Adventists, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu to name a few. It will not be long before the Mormons are in on the act and indeed the Scientologists. With the record of all these religious organisations I am always surprised that we allow them any role in the education of the nation's young.
NO RELIGION ON THE RATES
-
I quite agree with you UBT, all education should be secular and concern itself with a decent standard of reading writing and maths, together with science subjects, maybe languages and some arts. Also life skills like budgeting, and practical skills.
If religion is taught at all it should be an optional subject and all faiths should be explored and discussed equally.

Well, actually no. I'm not.
Reason... I'm Scottish and many of the issues you've highlighted don't apply to Scotland. In fact, I think the Scots have got it right, not only in primary and secondary education but also in FE & HE. It must be the only country in the world where a muslim (or hindu or Zoroastrian or whatever) is asked, are you a "caflik or a prodestunt?". Or alternatively, "whit team you support?".
So, we only have two significant religions. Makes life dead easy :)

John you are correct I should have said the English schools. You may or may not be aware though but we (the english) got many of these educational changes because of you Jocks. As St Tone of Blair whipped the too willing Scottish MPs through to vote for the changes in English education, that were opposed by a number of English Labour MPs. Those Scottish MPs would never have voted for those changes to be applied in Scotland, but were happy to see them foisted on the English. West Lothian question writ very large to drive home Blair's warped idea of what is choice in education.
And finally Esther... Just to demonstrate that Scotland is not completely immune from religious schools, there are still a large number of Catholic schools, particularly in the large cities. And I am sure it will not be long, if it is not happening already, before some of the more recent arrivals religions start asking, why not us too?
-
I think you'll find Mr Blair is not considered very Scottish, by most Scots.
As regards to other religions saying "me too, me too", curiously in many areas the Catholic schools are first choice for a variety of other religions due to their academic success. The Catholic schools in Scotland are not exclusive, its not uncommon to find a variety of religions on their roll.
I think there has been a far higher level of assimilation with immigrants from Asia in Scotland, I have several Asian friends in the Glasgow area and they consider themselves Scottish first and Bangladeshi/Pakistani second - which is completely polar to previous, older generations.
No figures or statistics for all of the above, its just what I've observed over the years.
