On Being Offended

It seems to me that, over the last few decades, people in this country have developed a passion for being offended. At the drop of a hat folks take offence at this, that and t'other. They even take offence at made up stuff - like that bogus story about councils banning Christmas and making us all celebrate Winterval. I reckon some people get up in the morning wondering what they can get huffy and puffy about next.

Now General Sir Peter Wall, Head of the British Army, has written to the BBC saying one of its dramas is "deeply offensive" to all of our armed forces. For god's sake man get a grip. Its a fictional programme. You are in the middle of a nasty war with thousands killed. Concentrate on that and leave getting deeply offended to Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells and whoever the new Mary Whitehouse is. Otherwise I might have to get offended with you.

No! We have agreed on many things over the years - it's just that we disagree on just as many  ;)

I find people to be more easily offended on CBF too in more recent years. It used to be a place where strong debates took place, now many people see argument or attack where really there is only discussion. It's a real shame, as I can be far more insulting than I appear on here :D

Correct Keith. What's wrong with a good debate? Why do people get upset and take offense because someone has a different opinion to them?

I'm sure both Colwyn and Mike would be the first to buy be a beer when we meet in Calis (can't blame me for trying)

Oh - and it is always nice to have a discussion without resorting to name calling and rudeness.

The majority of the "offendees" aren't actually offended. They seem to take great delight in being offended on someone else's behalf though.

For example, Muslims aren't offended by Xmas decorations or carols but certain members of the community are worried in case they are, so THEY take offence on their behalf.
