Your Favourite Restaurants ANYWHERE
« on: December 29, 2015, 22:23:35 PM »
We often discuss whether a restaurant we are in could possibly make it into our all time top 10 - and with the Calis & Fethiye 2015 polls coming to a close, I wondered if others had a top 10 (or top 5, or top 3 etc :D ) - and how many in Calis/Fethiye would make their all time top 10 (or 5 erm...etc  :) )

What are you favourites EVER :o ?

1. Glenmorangie House - where we had our Staff Christmas Night out - superb.

2. Ballinluig Motor Grill - a great place to stop on the way to Glasgow Airport - double egg and chips - fabulous   ;)

3. Rocpool Reserve Inverness - fine dining - very nice if you aren't paying.

PS I eat exceptionally well at home - the present Mrs H is a very good cook - even on one leg  ;)

PPS I take strong exception to Inverness being underlined in red  :)

I would have the Anatolia in my top 10 too - as would Mozaik Bahce and the lesser known Botanik in Ortaca which was sensational.

My favourite was in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria when I was working there - they let me take the Mrs and after two fairly average restaurants - nearly empty (but it was February), on the third night someone recommended "El cerdo que rie", The Laughing Pig... The taxi dropped us there and it was downstairs from road level - one thing I simply do not do, but because of the recommendation (and the fact we had no idea where else to go) we went down, and down, and down...and then suddenly we realised why everywhere was empty - the whole of Las Palmas was in there! No music, just a huge buzz of talking folk. A tiny bar area and a small restaurant, tables filled every available inch.

We were told it would be 30 minutes minimum for a table and to wait at the bar. Around an hour later we were told a table was free. When we arrived at it I was not impressed - it was about 2" from the next tables either side and the guy sitting behind me was sideways on and his elbow hit my chair every time he used his knife, it was that close.

But wow, what a place - the food was amazing, the service also, but the secret ingredient was that by the time you finished your main course, you knew everybody!!! Danes, Spanish, Germans, Dutch, all chatting table to table. Amazing place.

Eaten in so many good restaurants over the years that it's hard to reduce them to a top ten.

A few memorables, in no particular order and for a variety of reasons, are:

Albores, Jerez de la Frontera
Amrit Sagar, Udaipur
Bar Tivoli, San Sebastian
Collinsons, Dundee
Giritli, Istanbul
Dinos, Glasgow (closed now :()
Bota Alta, Lisbon
La Carbona, Jerez de la Frontera
Cumhuriyet Bir, Istanbul

MB would make the top ten if I was forced to choose and if the Megri Locanta hadn't gone to sh1t it'd maybe squeezed in on the basis of their iskender and nostalgia.

Sorry folks, while Anatolia was good, it wouldn't be in my top ten.  Mainly due to the inconsistency - our girls liked it, and we ate there fairly often but the food was a bit hit and miss.

I was lucky to have had a career involving a lot of travel and eating in some pretty good places.

Memorable amongst the finer restaurants are a top three: -

Vlado's in Melbourne. Wonderful steaks (and nothing but steak)

Palm Restaurant in New York. Wide range of great food and lively atmosphere with brilliant, happy waiters

Veeraswamy in London. Authentic (high end) Indian food with great service

Amongst those I could afford on a regular basis...........

Mozaik (it's way up there for the reasons we all know)

Dick Turpin's Café (a tumbledown shack that is long - closed) on the A30 near Heathrow. Best ever Full English

Union Inn, Newton Abbot (Devon) - Sunday Roast. Great quality with proper roast potatoes and real gravy for under 6 quid.

BOAC staff canteen in the 70's - great meals at low, low prices (my first ever "eating out" experience).

Some great memories there.

Lovely, nostalgic topic.

Having a humble bacon sarnie now.........
