hi sevy
this is Amanda b in Stockport.Have had Turkish lessons now for 7 weeks(14 hours).Finding it pretty tough. All that vowel harmony and stuff. Our teacher in Stockport is Korhan(kafkaf on this forum). He is very good at explaining but the lessons are pretty hard.Best of all we've got a test in 3 weeks.(HELP).my husband Lee is learning as well but it comes more natural to him unfortunately.
Can just about ask questions with plurals(according to last vowel)Doesn't come easy.

Hi Sevi

We are on the Staffs/Cheshire border and there doesn't seem to be any Turkish language classes close by. I am trying the teach yourself method with a book and CD (essential for pronunciation) However needless to say, so far Türkçem çok fena. (I think this is 'my turkish is very bad')
Back to the book!

It really is a hard language to master, you are right about the vowels,I went in the super market last year and asked for horse juice,I meant cherry juice, Visne and kisne, I think it was.

I too find Turkish very hard to learn...........but how on earth did you get "horse juice" for cherry juice?!!!
Horse is -at and cherry -visne

Mind you after a few sarap beyaz (white wines) I have been known to say "portakal"(orange) instead of hosca kal(goodbye) oops!!!!

I am in my third year of Turkish lessons i really enjoy going (lovely people) but really wonder if it is ever going to click!!!!

Jo.

Kisne with a squiggle under the s is an imperative verb form like Sit! Go! etc  It comes from the verb Kisenmek which means to neigh or to whinny like a horse, so it seems you said Whinny!:D
Not as bad as the guy I heard In Migros standing in front of the meat counter pointing at meat and in avery loud voice heard all the way across the store shouting Baaaaa and Mooooo(complete with Horns action on his head)!!!! At least you gave it a try. :)

Hi laffa

If I was you I'd stick with the sarap beyaz or settle for elma che, you don't know what the outcome of asking for horse juice might be - doesn't bear thinking about. If the store keeper goes out back and comes back with something in an un-named bottle beware!

On a more serious note, if you lot are having trouble with classes imagine my problems on my own with the book!! It is a very difficult language, mind you I had trouble with French as well and my tutor lived down the road. Good luck with your test Amanda, I'm sure you will do much better than you think.

Oh my gosh!!  :o I remember once there was this man at a kebab place in Fethiye, the Turkish guy slicing the meat (chicken and lamb) asked the English guy in ENGLISH which meat he wanted and the English guy was like (in a very loud voice) - 'LAMB - YOU KNOW.. BAAAAAAAAA' complete with the actions like you decribed Tribal Leader!
I was cringing and thinking to myself 'was there any need!' This poor Turkish guy looked so embarrased!! [xx(]

Just an idea why not have a thread on CBF that we can ask questions in Turkish or in English that need a Turkish language response; so we can practice with each other. Will this break any rules concerning personal chat lines?
Today my grandson asked me what the (primary) colours are in 'Turkish speak' as he put it. I have no idea.

Parts of your rainbow may appear pinkish where colours merge slightly but a rainbow actually consists of a visible spectrum of seven colours Red orange yellow green blue indigo and violet (discovered by Isaac Newton in 1672) Easy way to remember the colours is Richard Of York Gained Battles In Vain.
However you see it a rainbow is a beautiful thing.....Enjoy it! :) :) :)

I feel terrible visiting a country and not being able to speak at least a few words of the language so I'm going to make a big effort with Turkish.
Bought myself a book and a CD so I'll get my brain stuck into it. It is very difficult though.
It'll be a good challenge for me.

We have just started on Pimsleur. It is so helpful being able to listen to it to and from work although it demands that you listen to it everyday as any day missed means you regress a little. I prefer it to classes as the usual weekly schedule puts me off. we are off to ebay to get one of those word charts so we can have reminders around the house of the key words. Some of the rules are begining to stick and make sense although our vocabulary is pretty limited.

Make a conscious effort to learn just three new words every day.....that's over a thousand new words in a year. It is an easy technique...the first thing you see that you don't know the Turkish for, make a note and look it up.  It tends to stick this way as you are bringing a visual aspect into the learning.  If you just read it it is often here today gone tomorrow. :)

Something that worked for was to write onto yellow postit notes the Turkish word for whatever you stuck it to. I had them all over the house but it really worked.
