Title: Huge water bill
Post by: LEES on March 27, 2018, 16:10:18 PM
Hi all,

Has anyone on the forum ever received a really huge water bill and been able to sort this out with the Water Board.

We received a water for January of over 340tl, February was 5tl  as usual, the apartment has been empty since October.

Any advice would be most welcome

Did you check if the consumption on the meter and bill are matching ? It may be wrong reading.
Or if you have a tap in your garden or patio, maybe someone using them without your permition.

No garden taps, the meter reading seems correct for the period for February and March, February measured 1 unit, March so far is 3, we arrived on the 6th. But January was 65 units. It's about our usual annual amount.

340 tl is too much even for a property that is not empty and yours was empty in January. Can it be an outstanding debt from last year ?

It seems horrendously high but it’s worth checking if you are paying for any new infrastructure or maybe a new meter?

Other than that - if it’s consumption then you have a thief somewhere close by.

We have a property management company who do the payments, the next months bill is 5.22 TL, the bill is for meter reading for 1 month

Could it be that your management company haven't paid the bill for a while & , in effect, paid the entire year in one amount?

Sadly not for a year, have found the original bill lying in the garden, near the water meter.

Show the bill to someone who speaks Turkish. Maybe there is an explanation on it.

Sorry I didn’t understand your post. Are you saying that the maintenance company haven’t paid your bills.?
If that is the case you need to warn everyone on here.. Don’t just pay without question.

Have you asked your property management company why it is such a high amount on your bill? They would be the first people that I approached.I would then go to the office where it was issued and ask for an explanation.Have any of your neighbours had a similar bill?

Our property management paid our bill on our behalf, when we saw the amount we raised merry hell with them, it seems that although the apartment was empty and no leaks had been found and mended during this time, when we insisted that they take this up with the water board, they were told that as there was no problem with the water meter, the amount was due for payment by us.

Grrrrrr

Looks like you need to start looking for a new property management company then.

If no-one can use the water from outside and there is nothing wrong with the meter, then it's a fair assumption that it had to be used from the inside.  If there are no leaks inside the property then it suggests that the water was used by toilet, shower or kitchen sink.

Draw your own conclusions from that.

Have you been able to find out if any of you neighbours in similar apartments have been billed for a large amount too?Would it be a charge for a swimming pool water supply?Could Ozlen give you some advice?

Change your management company.

Aye, sounds like a change maybe called for.  I'm not for one second suggesting that your current management company is guilty of it, but its not unknown for management companies/estate agents who have keys for properties to utilise them for their own purposes.

I would test the swear filter severely if I added my OH's words when we went down to Fethiye and there were signs someone had been using the apartment in our absence.  Fortunately it was a false alarm, but if she'd managed to get a hold of the management company at the time, they'd have received a free lesson on colloquial and industrial English  :)

Who is the management company?

That's what I wondered..

Maybe before you (potentially) name and shame you should make sure you have all your keys back, changed your locks and got all pertinent paperwork back from your current management company.  In addition, cancel any POA's you may have given them and made sure all your bills (that you may have paid for) are up to date.

Then you can shout their name from the parapets...

Thanks everyone for your input. So pleased that no one else had had this problem, had wondered if 'it happens'.
We will be spending a lot more time here this year so will be able to keep an eye on things, I saw the other bills, no problems with them.

Will be dealing with this!

It happens quite often.. It's just that a lot of people aren't on this forum.. Mostly will the locals "borrowing" water from outside taps or plugging into the electric..It isn't unknown for apartments to be rented out by management companies when the owners are in The UK..  Trust me it is not uncommon..
