Title: French Rugby Fine
Post by: Colwyn on October 25, 2011, 16:02:21 PM
Remember the introduction to the RWC Final? When the French team advanced on the fearsome haka and let everybody know this was going to be a real contest? Well the French Rugby Union has been fined £2500 for transgressing the IRU's "cultural ritual protocol" for treatment of the haka. And worth every penny/eurocent of it. Well done, the French.

I thought the Haka was the Kiwi version of "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough",
but you will get fined if you try!

Well done France...did I really make a statement supporting the French???? need to lie down...lol

Its disgraceful that they were fined, on what charge?  The game had not begun.  What would happen if a team turned their backs and walked away and carried on warming up?  Would they be fined then?  I love watching the Haka but I believe it should be challenged and NZ should not be allowed this sole unchallenged privilige.

Rant over.

I can't believe that!  To be fined for challenging the Haka! Crazy  :o

Anyway, that's not the best I've seen.  In the last Rugby League World Cup Final in Australia in 2008 the Aussies and Kiwis were playing.  When the Kiwis started the Haka the Aussies advanced, shoulder to shoulder, until the two teams were literally face to face.  Awesome!

There's a clip of it on youtube but don't know how to load it onto here  :-\

"New Zealand & Australia Rugby League Cup Final 2008 Haka!"

Don't recall any complaints or fines then.

Didn't do the Aussies much good either though, NZ won and are World Champions in both codes now!

I feel a new cliche coming on - "This is cultural ritual protocol gone mad!" It could be shortened to CRP gone mad I suppose but I need to find out for what the missing "A" stands,

To follow the theme ...

First video shows haka v haka in a NZ v Tonga match:

Second video shows the haha as it used to be back in 1973 when it was about as threatening as a Morris Men performance and the kiwis described it as "a greeting".

I believe (muat look it up sometime) that the haka as quite obviously "a declaration of war" followed the appointment of the first maori as NZ captain who had his own "cultural ritual protocol" and told his lads that "If we are going to do this, we are going to do it properly" or words to that effect. Perhaps the Northern Hemisphere could respond in its own traditional way to native peoples declaring war on their troops - several rounds of musket fire ....... or perhaps not.

The whole protocol was a farce. The French won the toss and were still made play in white. They were furious as they should have been allowed play in blue.As it is a world cup no team is deemed to have automatic right to claim a fixture as a home game and colours are decided on the toss of a coin.

This was because they still have black and white TVs in NZ. Colur sets are coming in 2013/14.
