I read he was a member of the Hitler Youth and eventually the Luftwaffer (spelling?). Then a POW before being allowed to play football, after many protested, in England.

Sounds like he was a brave character who simply faught for the wrong country  ;)

Like the last Pope, you can't read anything into someone being a member of Hitler Youth.
