User Profile Error

I'm trying to log on to my - admittedly ageing - laptop, which worked fine last time I used it.
Now getting an on-screen message which says:

"The User Profile Service service failed the logon.
User profile cannot be loaded."

Does anyone know what I need to do to sort this out, preferably in simple, non-geeky words of one syllable as I'm not particularly techie.

No simple way of fixing (that I know of) but its not too difficult if you follow the steps here:

You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon” error message

Just remember to start up in "safe mode" before trying the first fix mentioned.
