We met him in 2008. He was at a Special Dinner given in his honour in Aberdeen.  We were lucky enough to be invited with some others to pre dinner cocktail drinks with him.  He was looking very frail and was using a walking stick and someone was helping him walk.  He was also very hard to understand as his words where slurred.  At the cocktail do people where invited to have a photograph taken with him for a charge of £20.00 per photo.
I don't know a lot about boxing but my husband was quite shocked to see how Joe had changed.
After the dinner he did a question and answer, but again, it was difficult to understand him.
He did seem like a very nice old guy though.

A true great, Ali might not have the status he has today without Joe's contribution.

I can remember speaking to him in 1982, I used to do a bit of boxing myself, & told him in no uncertain terms that he wouldn't have lasted 2 rounds with me when I was at my heaviest. When he said, "Just who are you"? I put the bloody phone down quick, 'cause you can be very easily traced through your number, don't you know !!   8) 8) ;)
