Title: Six Nations 2012
Post by: Colwyn on January 30, 2012, 16:33:11 PM
The tournament kicks off this weekend. Will new-look England bury memories of their embarrassing time in the World Cup and leave smiles on the faces of their fans? Which, or how many, French team/s will turn up and can they show their late improvement in the WC was no fluke? Will Wales finally convert beautiful rugby into a string of victories? Are the Irish past it or will they come roaring back? Is the long-awaited Scottish recovery arriving this year, or will they be contesting the wooden spoon with Italy?

Can't wait for it all to unfold.

England have more of a point to prove than anybody after the debacle in the World Cup, the Welsh surpassed even their expectations, the Irish, well you just never know whats going to turn up, the Scots for the wooden spoon & as for the arrogant(even more so than England) French, who cares.I hate to admit this, but if the Welsh keep their discipline & play with the same endeavour as in New Zealand, they will  deserve to win it.

Looking forward immensly to the 6 nations. Many happy/sad hours spent down the pub saturday/sunday afternoons with equally past it old adversaries and team mates, chewing the fat. The older we get the better we were. Already organised the venue and time to watch England trying to redeem themselves. Can't help but fancy the Welsh, they could have won the World Cup if the referee had not been French.
Awaiting the flack.

The play of the Welsh regions has, so far this season , been indifferent.  Shane has retired from international rugby.  I do not see Wales recapturing the form of the World Cup.

I think Wales does have a good chance based on their world cup showing, they have a lot to prove.

Kevin a proud and hopeful Welshman!

I hope they do well also Kev, particularly after a good show in the RWC, but the 6 Nations is a very special tournament, I think it's wide open and anything can happen this year !.  ;) :)
With Sundays game in mind I think Ireland will be out to settle a score after the RWC quarter finals, and always a tough team to play, especially in Dublin !.
Exciting stuff ahead m'thinks !! :D

Magnifique Les Bleus, look more structured under the new coaching regime, but hat's off to Italy who who never gave up and also looked good at times, no longer the whippin' boys of the 6 Nations ! - Parisse immense fair play !  :)

Scotland v England, poor game (particularly 1st half), England still with plenty to do with their new set up, Scotland too many mistakes !!, Park's kicking game dreadful, a game full of errors, let's hope both teams learn from it !  :)

The France/Italy game was worth watching and Brunel seems to have madfe a change to Italy already. They looked a far more organized outfit until they got tired in the last quarter. But the Scotlan/England game was dire. It must have been the worst 6 Nations game for years.  The only try was a fitting farce for a match of constant mistakes.

Fantastic game. After one the worst yesterday, today we had one of the best Six Nations has to offer. Ireland unlucky but Wales threw wave after wave of attack against them for long periods in the game. All the tries were really good, and Wales could well have been awarded another one except TV replays couldn't show it for certain. But that just made the finish even more exciting.

Nice to hear a team manager, Warren Gatlin, coming out on TV immediately after the game saying that his player was in the wrong and should have got a red card. Also the opposing manager, Declan Kidney, refusing to make a big deal out of it even when the interviewer was trying to provoke him.

A great day for rugby all round.

Agreed with the pundits on the point that George North should have got man of the match, Phillips had a good game, but George was exceptional, both in attack and defence.

Ah but Phillips has, at last, found out how to hang onto the ball in a tackle.

The Taffs or The Frogs, without a doubt the two most attacking & skilful teams by a mile. Really can't consider any other team for the championship. Wales v  France should be some game.

Agree 100% should have been a "red" on the day and the sited ban is well justified, particularly as the incident was off the ball, he reacted to the "cheap shot" into the back of Adam Jones by the Irish player, but this is NO excuse, however much adrenalin is pumping there is no room for for this kind of action in Rugby Union !! :-\

Another poor show from England, winning by another Hodgson charge down try, with Italy missing 2 penalties in the last 10 minutes; but a win is a win, particularly away from home, they'll have to be a lot more positive in their next game against stiffer competition, but at least they will be at home, Italy continue to improve under their new coach, Parrise immense as ever !  :)

Disappointed by the postponement of the France v Ireland game, (beer & nibbles at the ready), but players safety paramount, I'm obviously not as disappointed as the thousands of French and Irish supporters who turned up and were only told at 20.00 (stupid time for a kick off anyway !), can't believe such a modern stadium doesn't have any form of under pitch heating !! :(

That is unbelievable for a fairly new stadium.

According to The Independent the reason for lack of undersoil heating is that the stadium is built over disused gasworks and there is fear of gas leaking and that the gas might be ignited by an electric underblanket.

Watched my first ever rubgy game today. OOOOOOOOHHHHHH it's rough isn't it!
Watched it in Murrayfield hotel in the Capital and can't believe how many women follow it. Now I don't kniw what's a good game and what's a bad game, but I might consider getting a ticket for the next game at Murrayfield stadium at end of Feb, on the basis that I did enjoy the game/match/??????? or whatever you call it, today.
:D

Post by: valleyboy on February 13, 2012, 10:59:55 AM
You must go to a game at least once in your life Toky, I promise you won't be disappointed !, it may be "gladiatorial" on the field, but the match day atmosphere is quite unique and positively carnival, particularly as you quite rightly noticed a lot more ladies (and families) go to the games nowadays and it isn't as much of a male "bastion", I do question some of the ladies interest in the game, not so much a passion for the game, but maybe for the sight of 30 athletic hunks running around  ;)[^] :), but that's ok.
The fixture between Wales & Scotland has traditionally always been event for the calender, with people saving up for 2 years for the "Scottish Trip", and the same with the Scots visiting Wales, many a friendship forged over the years between the two sets of supporters and a very special time both on (always a good game) and off the field
So I hope you get to a game and you soak up every ounce of a very special atmosphere !!:D

Some years ago my sister-in-law joined us watching an England game on TV. Jeremy Guscott had a small injury right at the top of his leg. The physio came out and started to massage the area. My sister-in-law got quite agitated; shouting "I could do that, I could do that". Seems in rugby there's always some man doing a woman's job.

Don't know about the legs on show valleyboy at the game/match, but those gum shields they wear, give me the boak!
But as it's in my "to do" list this year, I will go to Murrayfield and report back when I've been. Alternatively, I could just lean out my daughter's window and listen to the game/match, saving myself the ticket price......or is that being too Scottish of me???????

Should be a great game but I think the Welsh backs will have too much muscle for the English. Whatever, I will be down the local with some old mates, a few pints and a good bit of banter. I had a great day out at Twickers five years ago, some banter with Welsh fans around Kingston before the game and again in Twickers High street for many hours aftyerwards, I think.

I would be very proud to be davybill.

What I cannot abide is the continuing attitude of the English that they simply refuse to accept the fact that they have lost. All I seem to have heard since the final whistle is "did England lose that game rather than Wales winning it"

And getting back to the Strettle decision, I don't seem to remember England complaining about the Greig Laidlaw decision so vociferously

Good match to watch as a neutral. Lots of ambition and endeavour from the Scots and good tries. But most of their attacks depended on  individual flair without team support early on, and then it all got a bit frantic and careless in the last 20 minutes. The French are used to winning and don't panic when behind, don't force the ball in passes, and keep coming back from advantage with some points.

Title: Six Nations 2012

This thread has slipped rapiidly from rugby to use of English. First grammar and now - are you disputing "spelled" Bm06? It may be more common in North America but the OED still finds it an acceptable alternative to "spelt" in British English.

Having recently retired from the Punctation Police - I was a member of the elite, armed response, Apostrophe Squad - I suppose we could move to tracking down errant commas, misplaced apostrophes, colons used where semi-colons should be, and such like. But I have a more pressing suggestion. BM06, perhaps you could pop over to the Football forum and introduce them to the two little letters "ly" and the concerp of an adverb; they are still writing things like: "The team did brilliant" over there. Consider this as a missionary challenge.

OK, we'll leave all that rubbish behind now, and maybe focus on the rugby, I think James Haskell has a point in this article about not following through, also I thoroughly agree with him that Owen Farrell is an amazing player with a tremendous future ahead of him !, such a cool head on such young shoulders and 100% commitment, VERY impressive !, obviously from good rugby stock !.

The first thing is to make sure we don't slip up against italy. After that I'm not sure what I hope for. Should I want England to beat France? Or maybe support France so (Italy willing) there will be a last day shootout in Cardiff. I don't expect thinking will help; I will probabbly get a physical revulsion to supporting the Twickers boys; I doubt I'll be able to do it.

[This only happens in rugby of course. For all other sports I am quite happy to support England against any other team than Wales].

In all fairness, I don't think we (Wales), have played to our maximum potential yet, falling short by about 20%, so let's hope we can put on a show against Italy, let's show them due respect boys, but let's be ruthless and find that final "edge". Hopefully on then to a "clash of the Titans" in Cardiff for the GS (can't say the words !).

Well done England.  It is just as well that they held on otherwise Roland would be persona non grata in England as well as Wales. Surely the international board should think twice before putting him in charge of any more French matches.

Too right;

French player penalised for deliberate knock on = Penalty
English player penalised for deliberate knock on = Penalty and yellow card!!!!!  How does that work?

Well, mixed sort of weekend. First, by popular report, Wales played badly - but still beat Italy by long way with the Italians never really looking like scoring more than a penalty. The Scots continued to produce interesting, fluent stuff until it comes to the crunch of actually winning a game. And then, what were France doing? Didn't look interested in winning the game until the last ten minutes. But, despite this, England's performance was still good.

Something is getting me all wound up - and it ain't Irish/French referees. It is scrums. Was there one legal scrum in the Ireland-Scotland game? And that was merely the worst of the three. I don't often see my (former) rugby playing friends now - being condemned to soccer supporting converstion. So I guess you lot are in better in touch with converstions than I am. But here are some thoughts.

Do they get former international front row players to teach refs what happens in the scrum and how to spot it? What is wrong with bringing the blindside touch judge into the field to see what happens out of sight of the ref until the ball is safely towards the back row? Why can't refs insist that the ball is at least entered into the tunnel between the the front rows instead of being slung towards the feet of the No 8? Why is the ball allowed to be a foot and half out of the back of the scrum, except for the little inconvenience that one of the No 8's legs is dragging out at full extention beyond the ball, allowing the scrum half an age to contemplate the infinite, his karma, and, maybe, to whom the hell to pass the ball? And why, with all this obvious cheating going on, do the bloody scrums last so long, are reset, last longer, are reset, and then ...... until you start to lose the will to live?

Perhaps I should have posted in the Grumpy Old Men section.

I agree with all that Colwyn, the scrummage must be looked at !, the time spent crouching, touching, pausing and engaging - referees being over analytical about front row warfare tactics - the ball being fed almost to the feet of the No 8, all contribute to frustration for players and spectators alike. BBC Wales have just run a Scrum V classic games series on the "box" and I watched England v Wales I think it was circa 1979 'ish, it was quite refreshing to watch the no nonsense approach to the scrum; scrum awarded, packs form and pack down quickly, ball put in (down the centre of the channel) by scrum half, ball challenged for by Hookers (hence the name), job done, get on with it !.

Another point using the Wales v Italy as a reference, yes Wales didn't play to their full potential (again), yes Italy defended very well and with much courage, but the game was flattened by, in my humble opinion, some very pedantic refereeing decisions, George Clancy did his best to stall play whenever he could and stop the flow and momentum of the game ( this is not an anti Irish referee, sour grapes sort of comment), he just seemed to penalise the team that showed the initiative and intent to play, which I thought the IRB were trying to promote to encourage free flowing games.

The laws need to be interpreted better, ego's (referee's) should be left in the dressing rooms and the referee's should be using their skill and judgement to enhance the  spectacle that some of these meetings have the potential to become !!. What they must realise that people are paying about £60 to watch this, plus millions of television viewers need to be entertained and thrilled, the referee's have a responsibility to help achieve this.

Another niggle I have (while I'm on a roll !), is that I hope the minor "theatricals", I see creeping in to the game, (I must admit mostly by our "Continental brethren"), doesn't start getting more prolific e.g. Bergamasco's reaction to Halfpenny's challenge on Parisse, which in my opinion was just barely a penalty and definitely not a yellow, I think is aimed at influencing the referee's decision, or is that the cynic in me ?, anyway the point I'm trying to make is I hope Rugby Union doesn't sink to the amdram realms of soccer !! ;):-\

Any way book me a seat in the grumpy old men's section (well middle aged men any way), onward and upward, I hope next week end brings us the delights of a Grand Slam, but more importantly some good quality skilful Rugby Football !!. Good Luck to all Nations, let the beer flow and let battle commence !!  ;):D:D

I agree with everything Colwyn and Valleyboy have said.  Because the infringements in the scrum are usually technical and depend upon whom the ref is actually looking at, I would like to see a free kick given rather than a penalty; too many matches are won by penalties with only the ref knowing why he gave one.

Well I have my largest pot (a Dutch oven) on the stove and it is full to the brim with cawl. It will sit in the fridge overnight to mature, and throw off its fat, and it will ready for tomorrow evening as celebration (GS), semi-celebration (chamionship), or comisseration (unimaginable).

As a post script and after the initial euphoria has subsided, what a difference having a decent referee yesterday !, my heart was lifted when I saw Craig Joubert was to referee such a crucial game, he didn't disappoint and justified the accolade of being the World's number one Rugby Union referee. Why can't the others model their refereeing styles on this guy !, or would it dent their ego's too much ? or crush their individuality ?.

I see Mr. Roland was up to his old tricks yesterday wielding yellow cards with much inconsistent gay abandon !, Mr. Joubert please visit Ireland and do a refereeing "master class" !.

Moan over, a wonderful tournament in general (not just because Wales won the GS) a lot of positives, and as a pps, well done England, you have the makings of a great team and when some Management stability is established I think they will do great things, what's the problem with the guy they've got ??, doesn't his face fit ??, probably doesn't wear the correct tie !.

Anyway well done all Nations contributing to an amazing tournament, I think you are great ambassadors for the World game and are helping recruit thousands of new fans to the game which can only be a good thing. :D
