Title: Changing money
Post by: sean0801 on October 02, 2011, 19:57:38 PM
One more for the road if you don't mind please folks :)

I've read a few posts around the larger forum about exchange places that short change unsuspecting tourists :o

Where do you recommend i change my sterling into Lira?

Cheers again, promise that's it (for now anyway ;))

The change shop in Fethiye (on the corner as you walk straight across from the Calis water taxi) gave me 2.93 today with no commission, that'll do for my exchange!

Definitely not Colin's clothes shop in Fethiye despite the apparently tempting rates offered. He offers apparently good rates with no commission but the small print, so small it isn't written, doesn't always match up! Also, if you do use him, be confident and prepared to stand your grounds on how much you hand over and count what you're given carefully.

A few years ago I changed a couple of thousand pounds. Luckily I had checked his published rate and knew how much I could expect. I also had the money I wanted to change separate from the rest so I knew exactly what I was handing over. I gave him the money and he said it was short and I needed to let him have another £20. I told him I knew exactly how much I had given him and asked him to check again. He counted about 3 notes down in the bundle I had handed over before telling me he was sorry, it was his mistake!

He did manage to get his revenge though. My husband changed £100 and not expecting lightening to strike twice so quickly, didn't count what he got back. Result - 20TL short changed.

A lesson learnt.

Sean if you need to change it in Hisaronu there is a change shop where the dolmus stops for the first stop in Hisaronu. If you are in the far end of Hisaronu then change it at OzGold.
Don't use the change shop at the shopping centre opposite the mosque. They had bad reports on here a while ago.

I should work in the City!! I changed some in the U.K a couple of months ago at  2.74 thinking it was a good rate, but deep down I knew it would be 2.90 when we come over next week .(Honest)lol
