Coffee Houses/Tea Houses
« on: May 10, 2012, 12:54:38 PM »
During the last few years I have read a number of histories of Turkey, particularly pertaining to the Ottoman period. People seemed to spend a lot of time in the coffee houses. When and why did the teahouses take over ?
Any thoughts ?

I think that it was simply that coffee became less popular because tea could be bought and produced localy

Thanks-just seen the replies.
Your probably right, it was an economic factor rather than some major social upheaval.
It seemed strange that Kemel Attaturk plotted and planned in the coffee houses, and as soon as he came to power, they disapeared. :-\
