I have in the past put a lot of thought into this same question, and decided that the answer is similar to the following - which wire is the live one in any electrical connection and which side of the road is best to use on a dual carriageway, in all cases if you complete the task without injury it does not really matter.

If I have got to do the kissy-kissy thing then I go right cheek to right cheek first.  I don't do the mwwaahh sound or even pucker in case any silly noise emerges!

I would normally do right cheek to right cheek followed by left to left but I agree it is confusing.
However our friendly taxi driver does not do cheek to cheek its more of a dipping of the forehead, right side to right side followed by left to left. (if you go in too quick you dont make the left to left because you are sparked out on the floor)
