In 2004 I remember a British friend buying a Ford Taunus (Ford Cortina in the UK) - looking at it, it must have been around a 1979 one - for £2,000. Not bad for a 25 year old heap.

A few months ago, Slikmrs and I were considering one of these:

I've spent the past 6 years running around in an old Renault Broadway that would have seen the scrap heap many years ago in the UK.

Dogan just recently traded it in for the same amount we paid for it and we recently had several offers for the same as we paid six years ago too.

Price paid 5500tl

It ran on gas which is available in almost every garage and works out much cheaper than petrol.

We bought a 15 year old Nissan Countryman pick-up (the equivalent of a Navara) in 2004 for 21,000 TL. When I was over there in January last year a saw one of exactly the same specs and year on one of the second-hand lots on the Karacuhla Road. They were asking 54,000 TL for it !

Wow, Nicola, it's hard to imagine how cars appreciate in value in Turkey when it's so much the opposite here.

I wouldn't have any problems driving an old battered car, but like everyone else I would want it to be reliable.

And yes, Colwyn, I see what you mean!

So over £15k for a car that's over 20 years old??? What? Insane!

I know you can only keep a vehicle you have brought into Turkey for 6 months before you are liable for tax on it. So does anyone know, for instance, if I brought a 4 wheel drive, like a Nissan Terrano into Turkey, how much tax would I have to pay on it?

you can't keep a car from UK in Turkey for more than 6 months unless you're retired with a state pension and happy to pay a mega huge bail bond type thing

I paid 8,500 tl  for a 1999 Toyota starlet, just over £3000 at the time.
was just about the cheapest car we could find!
worth about £400 in the UK.
have been offered 2000 tl more than we paid for it on a few occasions.
