I'm going to organise a walk out to the ruins of Af Kule Monastery on the afternoon of Sunday 2nd November 2008.
In order to get the best lighting conditions for those wishing to take photographs, we'll be meeting at the Af Kule turning on the road from Kaya Koyu to Gemiler Beach at 3pm. For those of you that are not familiar with this road, the turning is about 200 metres past the large "Sea Eagle" on the right-hand side of the road. Details of the walk are in the Outdoor section of The Fethiye Times, at http://www.fethiyetimes.com/ but we'll be cutting out the initial walk along the road.
You can copy and paste 36°34'29.67"N, 29° 3'15.71"E into the "Fly To" field of Google Earth for exact location of the meeting point.
All of the dolmuses from Fethiye / Ovacik / Hisaronu to Gemiler Beach will stop at this turn by request. There is plenty of parking space for those wishing to use their own transport.
I'm not arranging anything in regards to food at the end of the walk, as there are plenty of options available.
Please make sure that you bring at least half a litre of water for your own use, and wear sensible shoes as a large part of the pathway is strewn with loose stones.
In order to get an idea of the number of members likely to be taking part, please contact me through my profile.

what sort of distance are we looking at?

Only about 6 - 7 kiloms but there's a very steep path down, and consequently, back up again.
No good for old 'uns like you ! ;)

KKOB as you know we will be joining you for the walk but we don't know the area at all. I have google mapped the meeting point but actually to us that have only been to Kaya in the dark or on horseback (so my eyes were squeezed close the whole way and then having got off the horse, refused to get back on so came home via taxi)we have not really got a clue where to stop the taxi or dolmus (if they run on a sunday). You mention a sea eagle - is that a statue, an advertisement board, a hotel, a bar?
Where in Fethiye do we get a Dolmus to Kaya?
Looking forward to it.
Thanks for your help.

Eric & I did the Af Kule walk today with KKOB and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Many thanks Alan for a great walk and we will have to arrange another walk soon.

GB,
The dolmuses for Kaya run from behind the big white mosque in Fethiye. They run every hour on the hour.
To make it easier for you I'll pick you up at the Istanbul Restaurant in the centre of Kaya Village at 2.45. If you tell the dolmus driver that you want the Istanbul he'll stop right outside for you.
-
so, on the dolmus from fethiye, we look out for the large sea eagle?
-
KKOB thanks for the offer, but we will find it- just let us know what the sea eagle is. Tinx see you on the Dolmus at 2pm?
-
We may go a little earlier:D ;), but happy to meet up.
-
OK, well the Sea Eagle is a large "statue" painted black and white standing on a blue plinth, and is on the right-hand side just before a restaurant.
-
Thanks see you at 3 then.
-
I hope its a little cooler tomorrow 8)
-
It's OK, most of the walk is in shade.

Well we got there, eventually, the dolmus driver didn't understand Af Kule road, so he dropped us off in centre of Kaya by JJ's, it was 14.45 then.
We asked at JJ's they pointed us in the right direction, got to the roundabout and took the Af Kule road, and walked for about 45 mins and got to the Sea Eagle:D which is near where we were supposed to set off from but far too late so we went into Denniz bar and had a beer:P ;), Then came home:D Nice day out.
Sorry we missed you all ;)

Oh well Tinks,
at least you can say that you're the first ones EVER that haven't even made it as far as the start of a KKOB Af Kule Walk. ;):D ;)
