Title: phone & internet questions
Post by: kayakebab on November 24, 2010, 08:33:58 AM
I know there was a lot about this a while ago and just wondering what the situation is now about bringing your uk mobile phone.
Will it become locked & is it better to buy one in Turkey?

How much is a monthly contract mobile phone & do you have to have residency?

Do you need residency for a landline?

If you dont have a landline and cant have a router what are the different options to be able to use the internet?( apart from the obvious bar wifi)

Thanks in advance

A uk mobile would need to be unlocked and thenassigned to whatever Turkish network you decide to use, not a great hasstle but personaly, unless you want all the bels and whistles of a particular uk bought phone I would just buy a cheap basic phone here.

You need residency for a contract mobile, rates and plans vary as in the UK.

Yes.

You will either have to have residency or a neighbour who would be willing to share his wi-fi with you, or find a Turkish friend who is prepared to have a landline installed for you in his name.

Just get a pay as you go Turkish mobile, no residency required for that.

I know they were pushing "avea dongles" on the tv when we were over for 6-months although I believe you may still need a contract to get a good deal which will likely require residency (it did but things change)

Maybe there is a payg option from Avea - anyone know?

You would have thought that by now some "global" providers would offer a cost effective international dongle that you could use as "emergency back up" when not in a bar / internet cafe??
