Title: Licence V Insurance
Post by: stokie on August 25, 2011, 19:46:49 PM
I know this is a subject done to death but a recent incident where a friend has had an accident in his car and his insurance refused to pay out because he has a residency visa yet does not hold a Turkish License.  There are a lot of opinions on this subject but surely there is one law/rule.  Does anyone really know?
Do we need a translated licence or do we need a full Turkish licence before insurance companies will pay out?

Tourist visa = British license
Residence permit = Turkish translation of British license
Turkish Nationality = Turkish license.

Didn't the insurance company ask him what licence he had when he purchased the insurance?

My understanding is that if you are here continuously for over 6 months you have to have a Turkish licence.  I'm told they are easy to get - and that they don't expire when you are 70.  I had a problem in the UK with my UK licence when I visited earlier in the year - I gave the address on my Uk licence to the car hire company but they couldn't find me registered on their system in the end I had to give my turkish address which was ok.

I only drive a scooter (100cc) - I have a full UK car & motorbike license. Once I get my residency in January wouldn't it be easier to just go and take my scooter test and thereby obtain a Turkish licence as opposed to messing about getting a translation which would probably cost more?

I cannot believe that the "locals" pay a fortune to take a motorcycle test? Does anyone know if I can do this and the process to apply?

Ian

Ps We have a driving school almost opposite where we live in Fethiye and it would appear the main requirement is to be able to: Start - Stop - Start - turn 180 degrees and Stop again - honest - that is it :D :D

Ian, after seeing some car drivers here in Turkey I think that may be the same test as the scooter Stop, Start, (ignore red traffic light) and never indicate.  Reminds me of post on here a while age re -Turkish drivers!!!! :D C

Ian if you have a full UK motorcycle license there is no need to take the test, you can get a Turkish license using that.

If you are in Turkey for 6 months then you are required to have a Turkish driving license. It's fairly easy to do.

Barry - that is what I always thought but I am not so sure now!
And if I am (supposed) to get my UK licence translated then I think it could be cheaper to do the test and be issued with a Turkish licence and then I am law abiding and have spent less lira???

Better brush up on your turkish then Ian, as I believe there is a written test just like the UK.

Ian. If you have a motorcycle licence and car licence you will be issued with a Turkish licence which states you are able to drive both sorts of vehicles. As Baz says, no need to take another test.

Ian  My husband got his Turkish Driving Licence last year.  In total it cost 377tl, this cost may have changed.  As with all things official in Turkey it is a long process, going from one place to another so set aside a day and if possible take someone who speaks good Turkish with you.

The Fethiye Times has a good guide on how to do it- http://www.fethiyetimes.com/guides/160-how-to-guides/5378-fethiye-times-diy-turkish-driving-licence-guide.html

According to my other half the medical and eye tests take about two minutes, the longest wait was for the fingerprinting at the Police Station in Fethiye.

All the documentation, including your UK Licence is handed to the Traffic Police - so make sure you have a copy of your licence.

After all that you wait for 4/8 weeks and your Turkish Driving Licence should be available at the Traffic Police office.

Hope this helps.

Don't forget that on the back of your turkish driving licence is your organ donation. Tamamin means they can anything and then it's heart ,kidneys ect. Just tick the box you want.

TB752 - thanks for the info and the link to the guide.
So no test to take if you do it this way.

I still believe that if you could take the test the cost would be considerably less - is their any reason why you could not just take the test and do the practical and theory if you had a reasonable grasp of the language and revised a little so the questions/language used was familiar?

I bet if you could do it that way - the cost would be less than 50 lira and a great sense of achievement - maybe worth a go :D :D

Does anyone know if you can and at what cost?

I'd like to find out too, as i'm sure its a lot simpler than having to go back to UK to do the CBT thingy these days?
As far as i am aware the Turkish written test is a computer click the box affair. I saw a turkish girl studying hers a while back using brochures she got from somewhere, and they were easy to understand without any turkish knowledge at all - just pictures of road scenarios with three answers and road signs too. But dont know the cost either, but it must be a cheaper option.

Ian it will probably cost about the same if you take the test, as you will still have to do everything except your license translation to get the Turkish license, i.e. medical, blood test, fingerprints, criminal record check, buy the correct folder to put it all in, etc. and if you fail the test!!!! easier to just translate your license etc.

The license cost is the same for the turks, except they don't have to translate a license, which is not the main cost, the license is.

Baz - I think you have convinced me to forget the "feeling of achievement" - safest bet - translation :D
