Title: Vinn internet dongle
Post by: Kevin Sowten on November 02, 2014, 18:09:56 PM
Saw one of these in Turkcell today.
126TL (£37)
10GB over 3 months 79TL (works out at £1.80 a week)
Do they work well is my question ?

Also do tablets take longer to charge out here ? (lower amperage ?)

Ta    :)

Cant help you on the 126 TLY, don't know what that is, but I use the 10 GB 3 months for 79 lira, used it for over 4 years now, of course if you are watching stuff on you tube or playing games on facebook of course it will run out before, but you do get informed 24 hrs before it goes. by the way I have people on my complex regularly coming to me asking if they can use my internet as their landline is down. I have tried to tell them on several occasions to get a dongle and save the hassle of turks digging up the roads and been without internet for months. but everyone to their own as the saying goes. hope this helps.

Kevin, I take it you mean a Mifi which produces a wifi network for you to connect a number of devices to at once rather than a dongle. If so I have used one for 2 years for each holiday. I plug it in when I arrive and add credit at the shop and it stays on all holiday. Far more versatile than a basic dongle and download speeds are ok too. Mine is this type;

Tablets will take just as long to charge over there as over here assuming you are using the same charger. Most tablets have a higher powered charger than a phone charger. If you use the lower powered charger it will take longer.

Like Bewva I use one of these, think it is a brilliant piece of kit. Previously used a dongle which was pretty slow.that said, it will depend on how you want to use it streaming would eat up your gb very quickly.

We got the Internet connection from the guy that Volcan uses.  He put a modem in the house and a box on the roof and we had a connection.   Brilliant.   It was around £70.00 to fit and 35 Lira per month.  When we are not there he turned it off, when we come back it goes on again. ;D

Thanks for that - sounds a lot better than the dongle (and the same price !)
I assume that it acts as a home hub such that we can link our laptop and tablets to it ?
Will pop into Turkcell today (fed up with no WiFi at home already - after 2 days - have to keep going to a bar !!!)

Think they are a bit more expensive now. Got on the Turkcell shop at  the Otogar,, it is cheaper than the rest.

Thanks Marggie, just been there.
125 unit, 39 SIM card, 79 for 10GB (3 months)
And he gave me a driving lesson in shop on my tablet   :)
Angela is talking of listening to Chris Evans on R2 in the mornings
I would imagine this would be GB thirsty ???  :(

Surprisingly listening to the radio is not that ,"thirsty" - unlike streaming video - I regularly listen to Talksport at weekends (on the same unit as you have purchased) and it doesn't seem to use that much and I always manage to make it last 3 months with lots of browsing as well !!

Ps Just checked it out and basically the BBC / Talksport radio options would be covered by this statement ( so maybe a "treat" :-)

If you stream an hours worth of internet per day for 30 days then you would have eaten up 1.7 Gigabytes of data

Do any remaining GB 'carry over' after 3 months or die ?

Hope you don't mind me asking Jaquie do you only pay the monthly charge whilst it's switched on and how do you pay for the months you use
Title: Re: Vinn internet dongle
Post by: Jacqui Harvey on November 03, 2014, 13:29:43 PM
We only pay when we are in Turkey, it is cut off when we go home.  When we are due to come back we contact Volcan at Vojo's and he get's it put back for us.  We pay Volcan the 35 Lira.
It is also possible to get a T.V. box fitted for all the British Programmes and only pay when you are over, we are thinking of doing that next time we are over.

VINN WIFI hub now installed at home and I'm impressed with its speed.
Thanks everyone - 79TL for 10GB over 3 months seems pretty good to me !!!!!!

Good news Kevin.  On another thread people were being asked for as much as 350 lira at a different shop.

Ian, I thought you lost them but a friend bought one at the Otogar and they told him he wouldn't lose what was left- he was only here for three weeks. Thought he had been misinformed but when we came back after 10 weeks I put the Turkcell Sim in and had internet. I had put on 1 gb for 1 week before we left.

Oh - that is good news - I did notice last time I topped up that when I checked it online - it said 10.8GB which I thought was odd - so that explains it as I must have run it down to 0.8GB and then added 10GB - excellent news :-)

Yep - I started at 380 in the first shop (including 29TL connection charge !!!!)

Can you check online how many GB you have left ?
Title: Re: Vinn internet dongle
Post by: Marggie on November 03, 2014, 17:18:44 PM
Don't know how to check online but if you take your Sim out of the wi-fi, insert it in your Turkish mobile and send the following text message to 2222 you will receive a response advising you of the remaining gb. Message should read KALAN MB
Title: Re: Vinn internet dongle
Post by: Ian on November 03, 2014, 17:36:13 PM
Marggie - I have a vodaphone mobile and the 2222 doesn't seem to work but I never tried putting the Turkcell sim in the phone !!!

Kevin - you type into your browser 192.168.1.1 - you can do this from your laptop / tablet etc - then use admin and admin as your username and password and you will then enter the control area of your modem / mifi - from here you can see various things including statistics BUT don't change anything unless you are confident of what you are doing :-)

Ian, probably wouldn't work in a Vodaphone mobile.

Have tried checking online by entering 192.168.1.1 this takes me to a screen which welcomes me to the Quick Setup Wizard to confugure my device quickly. When I follow this through I get the following message "This action will disconnect your WLAN connection. Do you want to continue?"  Don't know whether I should continue or not!??

Hi - currently in the UK - so difficult to do from memory but is there not a statistics option somewhere without having to do that? I think it means temporarily disconnecting your signal but don't do it and when I am back towards the end of this month I can check it for you :-) I can access my statistics without going through that process but can't remember if I had to do it once - initially - must be age !!!!
Title: Re: Vinn internet dongle
Post by: Marggie on November 03, 2014, 19:04:08 PM
Thanks Ian, I didn't do it. There is no statistics option it takes me straight to the configuration stage

We are going back to the UK shortly as well for a short spell.  When in the UK if I use a 3 store Sim, it is really easy to find out my balance.
Title: Re: Vinn internet dongle
Post by: Ian on November 03, 2014, 19:37:12 PM
Yes - it is one of the only downsides that getting your balance is not easy in Turkey but I have a feeling my phone will give it me if I put the Turkcell sim in and do the 2222 - so thank you :-)
Title: Re: Vinn internet dongle
Post by: bewva on November 03, 2014, 21:55:28 PM
From memory....if you type in 192.168.1.1 then select the SMS option you then send an SMS to 2222 with the message KALAN.
You then get a message back (in Turkish) giving you your balance and telling you when it needs using by.

Bewva is correct, default username and password is admin / admin. Text to 2222 using log in is free and text back states MB remaining and expiry date.

If listeneing to the radio is not 'GB thirsty' - how about watching TV ?
Angela would hate to miss her 'Strictly' and 'Masterchef' - and maybe me as well    ;)
Title: Re: Vinn internet dongle

Bewva &; Simon,  I did think I would be able to use the SMS feature on the device but when I was asked to configure the device and then was warned that to continue would disconnect my WLAN connection, I didn't go any further.

Success! Just ignored request to configure device. Sent SMS and have received reply with balance. Much more convenient than swapping Sim cards.

Thanks guys.

Kevin - see this guide - and note how much more "thirsty" HD TV streaming is !!!! Although I don't doubt there figures - in fact the radio one is spot on - I found that TV was using about 350mb an hour but that might have something to do with connection speed??

In simple terms - 6.5 hrs of radio an hour and 3 hrs on non HD TV.

Just bought one of these from the shop by the Otogar - 229 lira for the device, sim and 4GB.
Glad I asked the guy to make sure it was working in the shop as there was a problem with the password that was given with it and it had to be changed/reset.
All good now.  :)

Just make sure you switch it off when not in use - you never know if you have left a device (or three) connected.
10GB used  in  three days must be a record !!!    :)  :)  :)

To get the message in Turklish (almost English), copy the SMS reply into google translate, it gives you a good idea of what the message is telling you. I also clear my usage before topping up, that way you can see on the MiFi screen the total usage. I also use mine in the UK for the odd occasion when I'm away from an internet connection. I take the SIM (TalkTalk) out of my UK mobile and pop it in my MiFi and use the data that is part of my contract. You have to change the settings to suit the mobile operator first. Best thing I ever bought.

Ok, I have a question and forgive me if I'm being dense......

But how do I use the SMS feature on the device? There's no keypad or screen.....the little envelope icon is blue which I'm assuming means I've got a message (given that the wifi icon is also blue when it's active) but I have no idea how to access it or check my usage. (Unless I do what Marggie did and take the SIM out and put it into my iPad or phone.)

Can any of you VINN experts enlighten me? Ta.

Hi - on your device (tablet / laptop etc) - type in the browser - 192.168.1.1

This takes you to your mifi dashboard - enter admin as username and admin as password and you enter the dashboard where you will see SMS area / Statistics / Usage / Settings etc - but don't change any of the settings unless you are confident you know what you are changing :-)

Thanks Ian.
I'm trying that but keep getting 'Cannot open page because the server stopped responding'.
Keep giving it a go I suppose.....internet working fine through via the VINN widget otherwise so it's not that.

Still can't get anywhere with connecting to 192.168.1.1 - have tried on laptop, iPad and iPhone several times, with and without VPN in case that was causing a problem.

No idea what usage is.....I guess I'll know it needs topping up when it runs out, just hope I'm not doing something vital at the time!

Turkcell took the SIM out of my VINN and put it in a mobile phone to check the balance - I suppose you could do that (if you have a turkcell phone that is !!!)

Wordbird try clearing your cookies, I couldn't get 192.168.1.1. To work last year until I did that.

Fran, thank you - I will try that.   :)

Kev - sadly the Vinn SIM won't fit the iPhones as they take the nano-SIMs. If Fran's idea doesn't work I'll have to take it to a shop.

I have just loaded software onto my PC anfd Ruekcell ask for my password.
I assumed it was the password for the dongle connection but it failed 3 times leaving me 2 more tries
Does anyone know what password it is supposed to be?  I have tried my normal modem password on the off chance but that didn't work either

It is standard to have admin/admin on all router type devices, but in most cases you need to have the wifi key (or Lan connection) to access the settings
