Hello again, thanks for the replies regarding supermarkets, we have just heard that we are required to keep our passports with us at all times, I am rather nervous about taking my passport to the beach and leaving it whilst we swim etc.. Any advice would be most appreciated..
-
The rule is that you should have your passport with you at all times. However lot of people don't but be aware that you will face a fine if you are unable to produce your passport when requested by an official...
-
We normally carry color photocopies but in the last 10 years of coming to Calis at least twice a year we have not been asked, when it comes to the beach we put all our bags under the sun bed cover with a towels and we tend to go in the sea separately so one person will stay with the bags. We tend to go to Guvens so the people on the beds around you are all regulars and they you hope would notice some one mooching around the beds

I understand the law on carrying the correct ID and respect this, but the UK tabloids would have a field day if fines are handed out to British tourists in resort areas. Any stories in the press( I can see the Mail headline now : :)) could put off visitors, and damage an already struggling tourist trade.
-
Whether the Daily Fail likes it or not, somebody will get fined for not carrying a passport eventually. Then no doubt they'll have their "sadface" picture in the paper or online and have their 15 minutes of fame.

When I went to the Jandarme to register my family as visitors to my Villa I took colour copies with me, I did have the originals but thought I would try the copies first they didnt ask for my original passport, am sure it would only take them 2 minutes to check

Dear all,
Many thanks for your replies regarding passports, we will take a few colour photocopies with us ( we generally do anyway) and I suppose we will have to judge the situation on a day by day basis. Thanks again, ( getting excited now!) :)

I Just took a picture of mine and keep it on my phone. Have been asked a couple of times while driving and everyone's been happy. I think in Turkye it just depends on the person and on the day!

There have been messages on F.B. Forums and on Trip Advisor that people have been stopped. Apparently the Jandarma went into a bar in Fethiye and asked everyone for their passports. Copies will not do as a copy can be faked. Also another lady wrote that the police stopped a Dolmus and asked all the Turks for their I.D. She was the only Brit and she did have her passport. One lady ex-pat was escorted back to her house to show her passport. Another guy on T.A was taken to the Police Station and fined. He was furious and wrote on T.A to complain.
This rule has always been the same Turks carry I.D. Foreigners told to carry Passports. Now in the present situation it is being enforced and is there to protect us.
If you carry a wallet, money, a phone etc., Do you expect to lose them? Same with a passport just carry it with your other things. We carried ours around for a month with no problems. We also have copies of our passports in the safe. ;)

The Jandarma would never go into a bar in Fethiye as far as I know Jacqui.

Well only if they were thirsty :)
But seriously you are right Jandarma are responsible for the security of the out of town areas...

The lady that wrote was an ex-pat and later a tourist wrote to say she was in the bar. Also there was an ex-pat from Koca Calis who said it happened in her local bar with the Police. I can only tell you what I read. If I can find the postings I will copy them here.
We were going to Hisaronu and the Jandarma had pulled over a mini bus and we saw the people all queuing up with their I.D's

I was on a Fethiye Seyahat bus back from Antalya last week. We were stopped outside of Kemer by the Jandarma. They asked to see all ID cards/passports. They took a passenger off and let us get on our way. Not sure if they were searching for him or just got lucky!!!.

Our friends went to the Erasta shopping centre yesterday evening.
She had her bag stolen, passport, driving licence money, and residency, plus/
I am afraid I wouldn't carry my passport or residency around Fethiye,[Get it dublicated]
i would rather chance a fine,
-
How did it happen? In the main area, in a shop?
Pulled off her shoulder?
This is really worrying.

I'm a little confused. If we are tourists/expats, do we have to carry any ID ( driving license, residence card, national ID) or does it have to be passport. I won't be comfortable carrying my passport everywhere.
Anyone has idea what's the fine is?

Yes it is a legal requirement to carry your passport. No idea what the fines are as they seem to vary with the different authorities...

I have read posts on T.A. From Tourists and the Fine vary the cheapest was 100TL the most up to now was 400TL. The guy that paid 400TL was furious as he said no one told him he had to carry his passport around and came to T.A to warn others and to complain about his treatment by the Police. :o
-
So about the same (or less) than the fine for having a fag in a UK hotel.

Yes, but the guy who was fined 400TL for not having is Passport on him, was taken to the Police Station.
I think the Police wll be makng a small fortune, fining everyone, judging by the number of people breaking the smoking rules, particularly in Restaurants where they even put ashtrays on the tables.
-
Off topic but is it not still legal to smoke "outside" in restaurants.
-
Off topic, but is is illegal to smoke IN restaurants.. :-X :-\ :o >:(

What happened was the lady was with some friends who had just arrived in Fethiye,
she was looking after their suitcases while they were shopping.
She put her bag on the floor, to talk to her friend, looked down and it was gone.
the security have the culprit on camera, and hopefully they will catch him,
