Title: Cutting down trees

Does anyone know what the problems with cutting down trees in a communal garden on a complex are ?Is there some law about cutting down trees, do they fine people or what?

What problems have you been told? Are you talking about cutting down completely or trimming? On a previous site I was on the owners were asked if they wanted trees close to their apartment removed. It was up to the affected owners. Is there anything in you Management Plan or been passed at an AGM? Perhaps asking other owners on site if they have an objection would solve the problem.

We want to cut the tree down completely as it’s grown to big between two houses. We have asked the neighbours most say ok remove it but one person says no and that it can’t be cut down because there is a law protecting trees in Turkey if you cut it down theire are re big fines? We are not sure if this is correct?

Thank you for that, circumstances might be slightly different but certainly makes clear the strength of feeling that can run with this issue.

Gunluk trees are protected and can only be trimmed or in very exceptional circumstances felled by an approved (by the council) contractor. All debris remains the property of the council and can only be removed by the contractor. The fines for unauthorised pruning are extremely heavy so goodness know what would happen to you if you cut one down by yourself.

Fortunately for the three UK owners at Aydin Apartments the fourth owner works for the Turkish equivalent of the Forestry Commission and was able to work his way through the red tape and paperwork to give our 5 gunluk trees a good trim last year. Without his help and expertise our site would have been like living in a black hole.

Can anyone on the site check with the council if your tree is protected? I know that some olive trees that are hundreds of years old can have preservation orders.
