Title: Gocek, a building site !
Post by: Rimms on May 16, 2006, 09:13:56 AM
I can't beleive some of the things they do in Turkey, for anyone who knows Gocek, it's a nice place with lot's of character. Imagine my horror when we visited last week and saw that the main street leading down to the marina had been pulled down, only to be replaced by rows of identical double glazed boxes.

there is a big row about this in the press, I read it on another forum.  Done without permission from the big bosses in Ankara or somewhere who had given express instructions that building in the Gocek area should be restricted to preserve the character.

Wait until you see this lot being built by Stoop's bestest ""friends"". lol:D

Gocek is now going thru the mass building stage as Ovacik, Hisaronu, Calis has. Will Fethiye and Gocek in years to come be joined by housing??:(

Supply and demand shouldnt mean destroying the character of a place with bland buildings.

I was in Gocek over a week ago and couldn't believe what they'd done to the place.  I'd only been there once before and ate in a superb restaurant on the front which has now gone.  I thought I'd imagined the place until reading this.  It's definately lost a lot of character, I don't know what the locals must think.

we were there yesterday and it still retains that old charm- just a bit smarter. Just cos we liked the oldy worly feeling the crumbling buildings gave it doesnt mean we can halt progress!

Is there a dolmus from Fethiye to Gocek, how long does it take and is it worth the bother.?

I have never been on the trip (on my list) but I have seen that a boat goes from Fethiye on a Sunday for the market. It was priced at £5 when I saw it - nothing else just the trip which sounded nice.

Thanks for the quick response but please can you tell me where to catch the dolmus? Is it by the mosque? Or would the boat be a better option?

The Dolmus runs from the bus station in Fethiye, by the garage behind Erin spot shop, it usually does a little detour past the mosque and then heads out of Fethiye and down the Gunlukbasi road.

Teresa, done that boat trip, it takes ages, you only get about half an hour in Gocek market then the boat heads off to Gocek island where it pulls up to let you swim. It's a nice trip but you really don't get to see much of Gocek.

Last time we went on the boat we had plenty of time to do the market wander round Gocek have lunch and a couple of beers and do some shopping before returning to the boat....must have been a good couple of hours. :)

The market is no different to any of those around Fethiye, except it's generally a lot smaller and often more expensive because of the "Yachting Fraternity".

The same stall-holders, the same tat, the same "Yes, please, Yes please", the same "Buy one get me free", the same etc etc etc

Weve done the trip both ways, dolmus and boat. Both take ages! But at least on the boat you're able to sunbathe and look at the views. The dolmus stops at every lamp post and is as usual, packed.
There are dozens of differnt boat trip options and the one we chose, Prenses- from Fethiye , picked us up in Calis and dropped us back, took us to Gocek- about 1 hour 20 minutes- dropped us there for about 3 hours and then colleceted us to return to Fethiye stopping at a bay for a swim on the way back. The return journey did take ages because of the stop and we seemed to be there for ever- but we got back into Calis about 6.30 having left at around 10.30- so not a bad day.
I suppose the best way to do it would be taxi- but not cheap!
