T mobile to T mobile - UK phones in Turkey
« on: August 14, 2011, 16:57:00 PM »
Hi - here is a challenge. We are over at the end of this month for 10 days and Gill's 20 yr old daughter Rachael is also coming over but staying with a friend in a b&b in Hisaronu (as they think it is more lively than the Otogar area where we live) :D

We want to stay in touch but we have a Turkish and UK mobiles and the girls only have UK mobiles which will cost them a lot to ring us.

So Gill tells me that she has regularly in the past sent a text to the UK from her T mobile payg phone for 20p (usually 10p in UK but an additional 10p premium for international texts) so if we give the girls our spare payg T mobile to use to text our other T mobile UK phone (which we will have with us) will it cost 20p?????????

Ps Does anyone understand me after that   :D :D

Sorry - I am taking her word for the 20p as I never use Gill's phone - and I have just told her what you said and she says "might have changed then"  :)  :)

But even if it is 40p could the girls text us for 40p to another UK phone based in Turkey? Or is it better to buy them a phone card and get them to ring our Turkish mobile if they want to speak to us (plenty of landlines in Hisaronu) - we are really looking for a way of keeping in touch without it costing a fortune.

Yes, but 40p for each text communication seems steep - any reason why you don't just get her another Turkcell PAYG sim?

I thought you had to take your passport / register it etc etc like we did when we bought our Turkish phone a few years ago and it seemed hardly worth it for a 10 day holiday.

Do you mean I can just buy a sim over there and stick it in our spare unlocked payg phone - that would be great - especially if we got vodaphone and we have a vodaphone Turkish phone - can we do that?

That would have other benefits as we are out for alomst the full year next year so we could both have a mobile if we need one - is that right - as long as we top them up as required?

You can just buy a payg sim, but if you do not register the phone with Vodafone, they will switch it off after about 10 days, and then you would have to go back to Vodafone to register it anyway. We did just this is April and it worked for over a week before it was switched off. We now have 2 phones with Turkish vodafone both registered.

I'm on contract with T-Mobile so hope I can help!

From Turkey: For T-Mobile texts to another UK mobile (irrespective of where it is in the world!) the cost is:

20p for a MMS

40p for a SMS

Obviously a MMS is the better bet financially & you will also get more than double the number of characters to use, disadvantage is you will probably get the same picture many times over lol.

To double check I would call 150 from your T-Mobile & make sure that these are the same for a PAYG user but I believe that to be the case. Also it's best to let them know you will be using the phone in Turkey so they don't disable it thinking it's been lost/stolen/cloned etc.

Mark.
