Dates (hurma)
« on: January 21, 2015, 19:37:51 PM »
We love dates with proper (market) yoghurt and honey.
Paid 25TL for half a kilo before Xmas at Patlangic market (and they were superb !!)
But we found some boxed on the same market last week - imported from Iran with
a donation to charity - 600g for 5TL and they are scrummy !!!!!!

Dates are one of my most favourite things.

I reckon your dates might be mazafati variety from Bam in Iran. If so, that's my very favourite type of date. Within the caramel/honey/toffee/chocolatey range of date flavours, they're at the "chocolate" end of the scale. I pick them up cheap from my local greengrocers once a year just after Ramadan. They keep, so I bought 5 boxes (don't know when I'll get to see them again...)

I've not tried this, but apparently the "thing to do" is to soak them overnight in goat's milk before pigging out on them.

When I saw the title of this topic I thought Kevin was asking about the dates of a religious festival in Calis, so I checked out the thread in case it clashed with my holiday!!!! (Blonde moment!!)

Love dates and always think it is a shame they only have them in the shops and supermarkets at Christmas.  However, found some in Lidl's last week.   This week found a big plastic tub of them in Home Bargains for 99p.
Would always rather have a box of dates than a box of sweeties.

Get one of your footmen to go to an Oriental Supermarket or Aldi. They have them all year round.

No oriental supermarkets around here, but I think the box I got in Home Bargains was good for 99p.
One of the footmen got this doormat for us.
