Title: Security searches at dalaman
Post by: suehugh on September 30, 2014, 08:54:53 AM
We were surprised to encounter extra body and bag searches just prior to boarding our Thomas Cook flight from Dalaman this morning.
It was only applied to the female passengers and occurred after the passport was scanned prior to walking down the air bridge
Strange !

I think it has to do with extra security across the USA and Europe, when we came back in Aug, they were testing/ searching elec devices and switching them on etc, cross section of passengers chosen.

Its one aspect of air travel that, personally, I never have an issue with.  The higher level of security, the better.

I remember years ago, when travelling on THY internal flights, you had to point out your hold bag on the tarmac before they'd load on the plane.

Here is the email Easyjet sent me on the 28th - a day before our return.
Due to a change in security requirements directed by the UK government we will be conducting additional security checks at the boarding gate.  These checks will include a review of personal electronic equipment, including (but not limited to) mobile phones, tablets, eReaders and Laptops.  Please can you ensure that all electronic items you are carrying are fully charged and can be powered up on request.
Maybe this does follow our new role in Iraqi airspace.

I'm delighted, the more stringent the better, it's a known fact that british jihadists are using Turkish airports as a hopping point from being in Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan etc. On a flight home last year there were three young men who stood out like sore thumbs as not being tourists or Turkish, they kept their luggage under the seat in front of them, one got out a laptop and was looking at pictures of horned devils while another was reading the Koran. They spoke good English, but I was never as pleased to get off a plane in my life.

I agree that security can never be too much but I wonder how good it is.
Last time  coming out at manchester both our handluggages were searched. He had a shower mixer in his and I had a packet of pate in mine. Pate was confiscated but when we unpacked  he had put it back.
Coming home My handluggage was searched at 2nd scan. The case was completely emptied >it only contained 2 bikinis, a door lock and keys and my medication. They took details of hubbies passport, not mine.
When we got home I remembered I had a lip gloss in a seethrough bag in a side pocket.
They didnt look in pocket. So my feeling is , how good is security?

On arrival at Dalaman yesterday, for our flight home to Gatwick, our hand luggage wasn't even weighed, never mind inspected, Dalaman security is a laughable farce, the " x-ray operatives " were more concerned with chattering away amongst themselves than checking baggage, when ours went through, the young lady wasn't even at her desk, and ran back to sit down there, only after about 10 passengers luggage had passed through the machine !!!!  >:( >:(  On another note, I am at a total loss as to how passengers will insist on attempting to squeeze their way up the isle on an aircraft with a huge, oversize bag in their hand, AND a frickin' great backpack on !!  Then they took about 10 bloody minutes to load it all into the overhead lockers,so long in fact, that the Captain made an announcement over the P.A. asking them to get a move on !!!! MORONS  !!

Strange Gordy thinks the Xray machines are a waste of time, without them they would never have detected me trying to get on a plane with an unexploded Panasonic bread making machine. After a major incident involving just about everyone who works at the airport, they decided to let me go.

Same here flew back a few weeks back and the 'kid' on the x.ray machine was laughing away with someone behind him, totally missed about three lots of luggage as he was not looking at the screen at all which meant I got through with my mini juice cartons, e pecked to have them confiscated at second check but no,they are still in my fridge as we used the CIP lounge and for once on leaving Dalaman airport I was full to bursting   ;)

But it was specifically females only, so we assume they must have been acting after a warning of some sort

I never once in my post intimated that the " x-ray " machines are a waste of time Guv' , they are an essential part of the security system at any point of of entry, whether by land, sea, or air , IF attended . A total waste of money otherwise.

We came home yesterday with Easyjet - went through the first security then spent 40 minutes in the 'speedy boaders' queue !! before going through another security section where we needed to have our boarding passes in our hand, and then customs.  We went straight to the boarding gate, and when boarding commenced with the speedy boarders we were taken aside and our passports checked and noted and our hand luggage searched, both the lap top and the phone were checked to ensure they worked.   Meanwhile a load of other people were just being let through.  I don't mind security searches but I do think they should search everyone on the plane rather than just a handful here and there.  Good flight home though and Stansted was nice and quiet - nice to be home to such lovely weather.

We too noticed the lack of observation at security at Dalaman.  I went to get my mobile phone out and was told to leave everything in the case! We had an Easyjet flight to Gatwick. We too were stopped at a table set aside to check Speedy Boarders before getting on the plane.  I was sent to one desk and my other half Paul to another.  Unfortunately, he was carrying my hand luggage as mine was much heavier as I'm the one who has the camera, phone, tablet, speakers, so very heavy!  The other case had keys, hats and light items that couldn't fit in the suitcase.  On opening my case I was swiftly sent on my way as there was nothing to check.  We had to get on a bus to the plane so I quickly boarded and looked back but Paul was still stuck at the desk.

He eventually made it onto the bus just before it was leaving.  I had taken the precaution (as I usually do) of turning off all my equipment before boarding the plane.  Unfortunately, Paul didn't have a clue about switching any of this equipment on and neither did the person examining them  :o  He was eventually told to forget it and sent on his way.  You would have thought an announcement that they were doing this check could have been made and I would have left everything turned on!!

If this equipment is such a threat to our security, there are lots of loopholes in the current system of checking at Dalaman Airport!   :(

They were too busy rushing us through the first two security checks last night with the usual "hurry please" that they can't have checked properly.  Nothing asked to be switched on etc.  At the gate, they put a big sign up and a screened off area for additional security checks for UK flights.  Baggage and phones etc checked and many people searched.  If they did the first two checks properly there should be no need for a third!

One minute per search x 120 passengers = 2 hours
