Post by: anniebd on June 24, 2006, 12:06:05 PM
Hi all!  Have been told by many people to only change up £100 into lira and change rest up when I arrive (5 weeks and counting!!!) however have just seen that M&S are selling at a rate of 2.974 would I maybe be better off changing it up here or is the rate better in Calis Beach?!![?]

The rate here yesterday in most banks was 3.1 (last week down at 2.85)who knows what the exchange rate will be in 5 weeks it could be more it could be less, if you are happy at 2.974 buy now.

On any given day the rate here is usually better than that available in the UK. Rates fluctuate in both countries though. On Sunday the Central Bank of Turkey is holding an extraordiary meeting to discus the Lira so who knows what might happen. :)

I think that rate is good and I would change my money. The rate can change a lot in 5 weeks and u don't want to missout.

The only problem with changing all your money now is if you have a large amount of lira left at the end of the holiday & want to it change back. The buy and sell rates are always in the bank's favour & you may lose out substantially, even more so if in the meantime the rate has dropped

The rate last week at change places was 2.8- we used the bank cash machines and got 2.92 in the conversion. I also changed a couple of hundred at M&S in advance for the first few days so we didnt need to schlepp to the bank and it worked out well.

Our bank advised us to change a minimal amount in the UK and change the rest in Turkey as we would definitely get better rates when we arrived.

That depends on whether the rate goes up or down at the moment its as high as it has been for a long time here in the UK who knows what will happen in the next couple of days

It's always a risk changing all your money at once. You will usually get a better rate in Turkey as they really really want your sterling. However, as Legless says, if you think the rate is good enough then go for it. We did exactly that when we were over last week - paid all our site fees in one go at a rate of 3ytl to the pound. It could prove to be a wrong move if the ytl continues to fall in value but at the end of the day we got what we thought was a good rate and went for it.

If anyone knows which way the YTL is going to go please let me know and I will make my fortune!
