Öludeniz Craft Market reopened last week. For those that didn't know there used to be a lovely craft street with 30 stalls in a street off the main shopping street in Öludeniz.
Three weeks before the season started stall holders were told that the craft market was finished - the council bowing to 5 years of pressure from local shopkeepers and land owners who couldn't handle the competition.
Never mind that holiday makers and locals alike loved the 'hassle free' craft street or that it attracted people to the resort who then spent money in the bars, restaurants and also the shops.
Anyway, just over a week ago after 2 months of the craft street being used as a car park and the season virtually over if you consider many people rely on their earnings over a 6 month period to survive and often support their family all year round the council agreed to reinstate the craft market with a slightly different format.
There are some of the previous stall holders, selling jewellery, some silver, lanterns and other TURKISH hand crafted gifts. The new element are some artists doing and selling a varity of Turkish handcrafts on the street for example calligraphy (probably mis spelt but its that squiggly writing on plates etc), Ebru - marbelling - carpet weaving) a couple of artists etc and a few other things.
Anyway, the craft market is now open EVERY NIGHT for business although the shopkeepers have allegedly employed a lawyer to challenge this decision by the council so who knows for how long.
Its a pity someone doesn't do something about the ridiculously high rents landowners charge for shops then perhaps the shops could sell their tat from China at more affordable prices.
Anyway, and finally it would be great if local people and holiday makers could support the craft market by coming along and if you see something you like spend a few lira. Most of the stall holders live locally, there are some high quality crafts available and the prices are fair; they have lost 2 months income and they need as much support as we can afford to give.
Thanks in anticipation..) :)

Hi Jacqui
the market is open every evening until the end of October. Closes at around midnight.
A couple of stalls do open in the day but the folks that actually make things get there about 7ish.
Best to come after 7.30pm I think.
