Good Rate for your Holidays - 2.90

I have given up trying to work it out now (the ups and downs of the lira - little logic to it apart from the moneymen making fortunes) but I have to say that as the Lira approaches 2.90 to £1 GBP - holidaymakers coming to Turkey are getting pretty good value for their £1 GBP.

There are some really good prices around - saw Zakkum today - 3 courses 12 TL and we know Zayra in Calis has been doing a great 2-course deal for 10 TL and Roka had a 2-course simple menu at 8 TL.

You would have thought they would be rushing to get here at £3 to £4 for a nice 2/3 course meal  :)

I still find Turkey very cheap compared to a lot of places I visit but people seem to be saying it's expensive. Maybe depends where you come from in the UK. Aberdeen is an expensive city to live in. Also I don't drink much spirits in Turkey ( apart from my litres of duty free! ) just sticking to wine.

I prefer to use the Efes Index to gauge my holiday costs but it does seem a very good rate. We might have to buy a few for September  :)

Stoop, I think a few years ago the Efes Index was a quite good guide to price inflation in Turkey for holidaymakers. Unlike a two-course meal (which could vary between say £7 and £50 in the UK) or an hotel room (2* or 5*, sea view or not?) a 500ml glass of Efes is a pretty standard unit. However, ever since the AKP Government decided to start piling the tax onto alcohol I no longer think it is a reliable guide.

[Some economics used to say that the price of a Big Mac in different countries was one of the most reliable guides to local costs and buying power = standard of living].

So how much is an Efes now?

My beer locally is £2.60 a pint for Tetleys Bitter or about £3.00 for a lager. In town its almost £3.50 to £4.00 for a pint of lager.

In Portugal we were paying 2.5 to 3 Euros last October for a pint of lager. The euro stood at about £1.14 then and it's about £1.20 now I think. So last October a pint was between £2.20 and £2.60. A little cheaper than the UK as I was paying about £2.80 for a lager then.

Frank - out of Cafe Pazar - turn towards the Harman Hotel - about 100 m down that road on the right - really nice owners - trying very hard.
