Joint bank account
« on: July 28, 2012, 13:52:13 PM »
Do the banks in fethiye allow people to open a joint account if they are not married.I did hear that they are not too keen to do this if you are just living together.

You can open joint accounts but you may want to consider that in the event of a death of one of the named persons the bank account will be frozen until it is all sorted out which could be a very long time.

Or of course one joint owner, let's say as a random example a mature expat lady, may be responsible for filling the account and the other account holder, let's pluck a made up character out of thin air...a younger chap from a more local area, might be  more responsible for emptying it and buggering off forever  ;)

Waiter minute! That's a rather stereotypical answer and not the sort of account of things I'd expect from you Mr Scunner.

In response to Nichola's reply wouldnt this be the same if it was a married couple?
If one partner dies couldnt the other partner just withdraw the money or does it require both signatures to withdraw money.

Once one of the partners in the account dies, whether they're married or not, the account is frozen.

In theory, the surviving partner could withdraw all the funds before informing the bank of the death. But, that's illegal and it's not going to look very good for the survivor if the death is sudden or is ruled as suspicious.

if you have a joint bank account in turkey and  one of the joint account holder dies,
then half of the account is frozen,  the other half joint account can use the unfrozen
half until the fozen half is sorted out legally. this fact as it happened to me and took
almost 1 year to sort it out

Yes, sorry, my mistake. Half of the funds in the account are frozen.
