We have a joint account and a seperate account in Carole's name both with internet banking. If  something happens to the man it can be very difficult and time consuming for the wife to access funds, at a time when she would need it most so always a good idea to have a seperate account in my opinion.

Have a joint account for day-to-day stuff but if you have investments, seperate them into individual accounts.

We were told that in the event of a death of one of the joint account holders,(make sure either are signatories) the surviving person should go in and transfer all the funds into an account in their name. Then inform them of the death a few days later.
If not the entire joint account gets frozen not just the deceased persons 50%.

Joint account every time with either to sign, it's not just because of getting access to cash in  extreme cases like death, but also day to day running around when perhaps one or the other can't get into town, or perhaps are out of the country or even access the account via the twinterweb.
