Title: Bars and Restaurants You Miss From Yesteryear
Post by: Scunner on June 18, 2016, 10:01:45 AM
Inspired by another topic

Why places do you wish were still here...Calis or other local areas. Or maybe a particular era for an existing place...

I will kick off with the Birlik down in Koca Calis - simple, good food and huge measures  ;)  No floor inside, but they did rake the beach to keep it neat.

La Terace (which is now the Curry Palace). Loved that place it as so cool and chilled out and the staff and Owner were lovely people.  Always remember Serkan at the bottom of the steps waiting to welcome you.  People watching up there was the best.  I remember one night they had a guy up there fire eating and swinging around fireballs.
I also like the Bus Stop below La Terace for a drink or two. The guys in the bar there were great and the cocktails were the best.  The prom has never been the same without those two places.
For Fethiye we miss the Restaurant at the end of Paspatur, The Cadde, going upstairs and looking out at the view over the Marina, was like an Oasis in such a busy part of town. The home made lemonade in there was so good as were the beef burgers.   Also miss the Italian Restaurant that was in Paspatur lovely setting very cool and good food.

Must all be from the same era but I too loved La Terrace,Bus stop and the Italian in the Pas Partur.Places often go through phases and it's usually because of the staff ,we loved Cafe Soul when Billy,Ossie and Serkan were there,we loved Anna's for a season a few years ago but staff changed. We loved the Birlik and Suatts but that was short lived as within a couple of years the chef, owners etc moved on and then they closed

Easy question - The Post Office (2).

Wonderful people and the main reason we kept going back.

Mrs H was particularly fond of the place - I have no idea why   ;)

Enjoyed many lovely nights at the Orient (in Falcon and George's days) and the Nil - they were both very busy and they were the places to go.  Also enjoyed the Magic Pan when Ouzi was there, also Vadi Gardens was a favourite (before the block incorporating the meeting point and oceana was built.   We also used to go to the restaurant where Mangals is opposite Meeting Point - don't remember the name we always called it Rock on Tommys because the owner looked like the guy from Cannon & Ball.  Happy days.

Tekins  in Koca Calis  same set up as the Birlik with probably the best genuine Turkish night with folk dancers and someone explaining what the dances were representing,Tekin was / went out of his way to ensure all enjoyed the evening, shame some folk took advantage.

Wow I remember the Magic Pan Christie - I think the older guy called himself Raymond but I can't fully remember - fond memories of some lovely meals in Sultans too.

Susuz on The corner...opposite the Dolphin roundabout.... It was where we had our first pide and spent some lovely days out drinking on their balcony... I remember one evening we called in for a meal and the football was on.. The place was heaving with local Turkish men.. I said " we will come back tomorrow".. "no no no" said the owner come in.. We ordered 2 chicken casseroles.. He had to go out and buy the chicken. tomatoes etc, . Made us some Turkish flat bread. Free salad, (everywhere in those days).. It took over an hour but it was the best chicken casserole we have ever eaten in Calis... Their food was great... We arrived to buy a property in The April.. Apart from them, Josephs and The Nil Bar everywhere else was closed.. Dirt road. No lamps.. it was wonderful...

Susuz was fantastic - as their next door neighbour they fed me almost daily for about a year. The food was sensational and they never ever realised their potential. Also as their next door neighbour I can also confirm he was totally unstable :D

Sardunya opposite Scarletts. Simple Turkish food, home made wine, and a real friendly welcome.

Saw, albeit from Scarlett, the worst belly dancer ever in Sardunya.

More disco really. Happened to be in the company of Falcon who was genuinely embarrassed.

I know it's still there but I wish we could have Ayden Pide back as it was in their glory days. Great food, huge portions and amazing value - and always packed. I think it came 2nd in the first ever CBF restaurant poll.

We are still regulars to Ayden pide, not as busy as yesteryear but the food still great, mega portions and it's just one of the places that has a special something for us as it was probably one of the first places went to ten years ago.

there was years ago a great place with lanterns next to Georges  mainly full of germans that we visited great food,   which then become Enya

Billy (Bulent) from Cafe Soul now runs Cafe Inn up by the Sunday Market. Serkan returned to Leeds but has since split up from his wife and kids and his whereabouts are now unknown to me. Ossie hasn't been seen in Calis for a couple of seasons.

I think you mean Keyf - near the Dolphin Roundabout on the waterpark road. It did indeed move near Scarlet Bar - Cihan who ran it opened the aforementioned Sardunya.

Does anyone remember the name of a bar that had a waiter in who some people called 'cowboy'? Wore a leather bikers jacket all the time (sleeveless) and had a brilliant laugh and was forever in trouble with someone for. My understanding. To be fair he did move around a bit between seasons; I'm more interested in the fellas name tbh as I was wondering what became of him. I haven't been to calis in five years since I got married there but went about 5 times or so on a yearly basis back then

Cowboy is now running Calis Car Hire, not too far from the dolphin(less) roundabout. On Rod Stewart nights, he can usually be found behind the bar in Lee's

From recent history Vojo's great place for a meal and they had some good entertainment.  I remember (in October)  sitting having an Irish Coffee and Volcan had a fire going in an oil drum, we all sat talking.  The place that replaced it is so quiet and dull looking.
