My broadband and neighbours have slowed considerably in the last few days. I have been told that TT have cut through a major cable somewhere in Calis (maybe near upside down bridge).
Does anyone know about this problem? If it's a general problem I will wait before calling out TT. I normally get about 4.8 mps but this morning it is 0.67!

Yes service has been up and down especialy Monday, still fairly slow at the moment, I'm getting around 3mps instead of 8

Unlikely to be caused by a cut cable, if it is affecting more than one of you in an area. More likely to be a problem at the exchange or local node if there is any fibre-optic in the local network (not to your house. This type of fault sometimes comes about when they are carrying out re-arrangements in the local exchange or node, and are usually completed with within a few hours (in the UK) and then the service comes back up again to normal, usually over some 5-12 hours.
Might be worth powering off your router for 5 minutes, and then powering it up again. If it hasn't come back up to normal after that I would report it.

Now discovered that unlimited is in fact limited! You are able to download 25gb per month then TT slow your broadband down. We used to get 4.8 mps and now it's 0.8! It will resume to normal at the beginning of April.
Only way round it is to use a VPN so TT can't see everything that's being downloaded
We got unlimited so we didn't have a cap on downloads and have downloaded BBC programmes and some films but not a huge amount - so not too happy!

What is VPN ?

A VPN is a "virtual private network" or something like that. If you set up a VPN network you can hide what you are downloading or fool other sites into thinking you are somewhere else. We can't watch BBC TV over here on the internet but if we have a VPN that says we are on a UK server it fools the BBC into thinking we are in the UK.
I think that is about right.

Can someone explain to me how a VPN would stop TT seeing what download amount you have used.

I don't think a VPN stops TT seeing how much you are downloading, only WHAT you are downloading

And I'm sure TTnet couldn't care less what you are downloading.

We need the VPN to allow us to download from sites like BBC i player which are not allowed outside the UK. I have been told that if I use uktvaccess or expatsheild, Turk Telecom may not be aware of how much data we are downloading and stop them from squeezing our bandwidth.

Yes I know - what I mean is it is the regulations covering the BBC etc in the UK that prevent you watching iPlayer and the like. TTnet wouldn't care if you were on iPlayer or not. My understanding of VPN is the same as Steve's - there's no way it could hide your data usage from the people who supply your data to you. Would be popular though - even here in this house we are throttled (Virgin Media).

Without wanting to put the same old whingeing thing - but I will anyway - Typical! Guess I was being naive when I thought unlimited meant unlimited!!! ;)

Mines unlimited -ish, i have a 100 GB limit then it slows down if i go over that. VPN's only fool the site you are going to into thinking you are somewhere else.

It's the same rule for most of the providers in the UK. Unlimited is rarely truly that

Which broadband package do you have?

I have 8mb unlimited but capped at 100GB if it goes over it slows down but not gone over the limit yet. I also have a static IP address too.

Thanks Screamland - Sorry to bang on about it, but as I understand it Turk Telecom and TTnet are under the same ownership and therefore I should be able to get 100gb download too. We signed up for what we thought was the 'best' package we could get get in terms of mps and being unlimited.
I didn't know about the download cap so will go back to TT and ask about the 100gb download - do you pay 59 YTL per month?
I'll look into it and check this out - you learn a new thing everyday!

Hotlips, no i upgraded mine a while back so not on the current 'deals' mines 89tl a month which includes a fee for my static IP address too. Theres also different limits on it too, i did mine on the phone with them. Even though they are both technically the same company they are a pain in the butt. I pay mine direct in the shop opposite the dolmus stop and mosque in Fethiye and if i pay by card i get two seperate charges which also result in two separate charges on my card for foreign transactions.

Many thanks - so we can call for a bigger download. Perhaps will watch our downloads each month and see if this is something we need to consider, once again thanks for the info, much appreciated

Interesting topic, I have used Giga News for several years and I'm just trialling their Vyper VPN service which seems to work very well indeed. Interesting to see what they say about ISP Throtleing http://www.giganews.com/vyprvpn/
