Last week following rave reviews we visited the new Charcoal Palace near the Calis duck pond to try their fish & chips.
It was delicious, panga (panka? ) fish in the lightest batter.
Served with homemade chips, mushy peas, tartar sauce.
Bread and aci dip and a gorgeous garlic & mint yogurt given as a starter.
20tl.
The family have recently moved to Calis and had a fish & chip shop in Scotland.
Their son is 15 and is the friendliest, nicest lad with a big personality and is a brilliant host and waiter.
Definitely recommend.
They do Turkish food too. Cant comment other than what we saw coming out the kitchen looked very nice.

I meant to add..... No noisy music from bars. The singer is over the opposite side and provides a nice atmosphere without being obtrusive.

This sounds like the place our friends visited earlier in the season. They both agreed the fish and chips was amazing too.
We must try it when we're next over
-
We went a couple of weeks ago and agree that the fish and chips were excellent. It's on the site of the old Bedestan restaurant that closed down last year.
-
Can back up everything Linda says. 7 of us went last Saturday, most of us had fish. Best fish and batter I have tasted in 11yrs of living here. One of our party had mixed grill which was huge and tasty.
-
Anne, its the place where we all ate last year, the Bedestan Ocakbasi, right at the back. They had a very large buffet laid outside when we walked through recently. Lots of choices.
-
Thanks for the recommendations - we will eat here when we come over (6 more sleeps ;) )!!
-
They took over the Bedistan but yes same building.

Can only agree a great place to eat & no noisy bars in ear shot if you want to avoid that, I had a mixed grill & explained I did not like chicken on the bone so they kindly swapped chicken wings with liver on kebab skewers, no fried egg either which is a good thing as plenty of meat which a grill should be about, will definitely try there fish and chips next time we eat there.
-
Can you give more directions please not familiar with the bedistan
Always like to try new places on each visit
Thanks
-
hi kevin. are you in calis? its across from dawn beach mate. its called the charcoal grill. in the square where the duck pond is.
-
Hi jack
Not there at moment
We have had to cancel twice this year as Tracey has been unwell
We are booked for 3 weeks start of October
-
We have visited Calis twice on previous holidays and are returning on 30th July but I have no idea where the Calis duck pond is. Hopefully someone will be able to point us in the right direction.
Thanks
-
if you leave the beach and walk over the wooden bridge down the main street, about half way down on the left is Berlin Jewellers. There is a small walkway just next to it - that will take you to the duckpond area.
-
We went today for a fish and chips lunch and it really was superb...will definitely go back...shame it's opened just as we are about to leave :'(

I saw a T.V. Programme about the Panga Fish or Basa Fish. It is imported from Vietnam and is a catfish that feeds off the bottom of waters. It gets mixed reviews as the waters it lives in is not the best.
Look it up on the Internet for lots of information.

You really can't read much into that as millions of people love mushrooms but the compost they live in is definitely not the best.

We love Waitrose's Basa Fillets in Lemon and Herb Batter. You should try them. Oh, hang-on though, you haven't got a Waitrose up there have you ? ;)
-
Nearest one about 110 miles away. So well within a little shopping trip.
-
Is there supposed to be a problem with bottom feeding fish? Pity that, bottom feeders include halibut, plaice, sole, cod, haddock, bass, and bream. Or perhaps ours live in places with really nice water.
-
Why the carping?
-
You can't win Jacqui. ;)
-
O.K. Don't shoot the messenger. I am reporting what I have seen and read. It is up to everyone to decide, if they want to eat this fish.
My decision is to give it a miss. Probably because we have the best Fish & Chips just down the road in the major white fish port of Europe. I have yet to find anywhere to beat it.
However, if everyone thinks place in Calis it is good, that is great. They will never miss us. ;D
-
Haven't eaten in your neck of the woods Jacqui but you will go a long way to beat Shetland.
Think it's called the Fort Cafe and Take Away.
-
Zanres in Peterhead won the award for the best Chipper in the U.K.
Cannot beat Peterhead Haddock.

I am not a fan of Trip Advisor Jacqui but........

Whatever happened the place won the award and had it on it's CV at one point - no mean feat.

Zanres restaurant closed years ago. However, Zanres Fish & Chip Shop that was originally owned by Roger Morrison, Chairman of Peterhead F.C. Has always been open. They were so successful they opened another branch in Mintlaw.
Roger told me a number of years ago, his ambition was to win the best Chipper in Scotland award. Of course, he did and he sold the Chipper to the Manager for a reputed very large sum of money. It has been run by the current owner since then and is still as popular as every. We have a fish supper from Zanres once every week. Zanres is an instituition in our area. They have at least 5 people serving and always have a queue out of the door. Roger now owns the Cock & Bull Restaurant at Balmedie, a place that our leader Scunner has eaten in.
So H, hope you enjoyed that potted history and hope you will try the Chipper one day.
-
thought this post was about real fish and chips in calis. slightly off subject again. maybe the next time YOU are in calis you could try the charcoal grill. great reviews.
-
Yes, it was, but that is the joy of this Forum, diversity.
-

I always wonder why the ex-pats get so irritated and annoyed when anyone mentions anywhere else but Calis on this Forum?
-
I suppose its because the subject was about The best fish and chips in Calis,
Its a long way to go to Peterhead from Calis for fish and chips?
-
I always wonder why the ex-pats get so irritated and annoyed when anyone mentions anywhere else but Calis on this Forum?
They don't if the topic is in the Football forum - unless Calis is now part of the Premiership (I don't follow the thing).
-
Huh?
-

Do they though ?
-
Obviously, KKOB you are joking?
-
Not all. Just a couple of EPK's. ;)
-
After all this about fish & chips re the type of fish I feel you cant go wrong if you go to GUNISIK and have a meal of a very good sized COD ;D in crispy batter, :P homemade chips with a side salad for 17 TL
-
Will only have fish and chips if someone does Haddock. Cod, IMHO has a very strong taste. However, I know it is what is served in the Chippers in England, so it should be very popular in Calis and perhaps more so than Vietnamese catfish?
I have read in the past that Whiting (Mezigit) is the fish that is used most for fish and chips in the Calis/Fethiye area.
-
Jacqui, the best chipper award last year went to a chip shop in Brae in Shetlands, I think it is called Frankies, we passed it last month whilst stuck in Shetlands waiting to go offshore. if I remember correctly Zanres did win it one year.
-
First visit to Charcoal palace today and we,ll be going again probably early next week, when I can get fish, chips peas and homemade tartar sauce like they served us today the chip pan is redundant at our house. Will certainly recommend them to friends and they are such a lovely family too
-
We always have a beer next to the duck pond when we go over. However be careful around dusk because the midges are a damn nuisance. I think we got bitten by them more than mozzies this year.
-
Took my friend to the Charcoal Palace last night for the fish and chips and she gave them a 10 out of 10.Praise indeed.Staff were very attentive and friendly and service was good.Unfortunately I couldnt taste the fish as am gluten intolerant but they made sure the rice with my chicken curry didnt have the small wheat flakes in it.Huge plateful and couldnt eat it all.The chips were delicious too..Wish this lovely family all the very best in their new business
-
Does anyone remember the fish & chip shop run by the two English couples in 2004? It was just up from the Mangal towards the Dolphin Roundabout. The fish & chips were pretty good but the two couples never stopped arguing and shouting at each other, almost 24/7. Very angry folk.
-
Snapper and chips?
-
Exactly that, I've never known a more consistently angry man :D
-
Oh yes scunner I remember them well. Brought back a lot of memories there and yes they did argue a lot lol
-
No they didn't !
-
Oh yes they did...(can't beat a bit of Tom n Jerry)

Did they batter each other?

No, but they gave each other a haddock with all the shouting.
-
