Title: Whose food reviews do you trust the most?
Post by: mercury on September 06, 2016, 17:24:05 PM
I always read the food reviews on here but am quite often dissapointed after some of them have tempted me to try them with the "great" reviews..    The only review that I really trust now as an honest opinion and she is usually right is Linda Kayakebab... She tells it how it really is and she is seldom if ever wrong.... I do think that she is fair with her reviews.. If a place is good then she will say so.. I am sticking with her in future...  ;D    We have our own favourites but I rely on her for the new places... Whose reviews do you trust??

I think the biggest problem here is continuity.
Thats where the Meeting Point does well. And Nil Bar. Family concerns with same chefs year in year out.
Neither are top class cuisine, just good honest grub.
I think generally eating out across Calis & Fethiye is mediocre and we're often disappointed.
A lot of course is down to budget and Mr Kayakebab won't eat anywhere he has to pay a few lire extra ( apart from Yengec Ovacik which is superb) so we stick to more the budget end and love proper Turkish lokantas.
So if you want top end reviews look elsewhere!

I suspect that most members would assume that kayakebab has eaten on the front fairly recently which makes me wonder why the question ?.

I took it to mean that someone who prefers traditional Turkish lokantas won't find themselves eating in Calis much  ;)

I take a view based on what a good number of people are saying - both those I know and on sites like this and Tripadvisor etc.

When it comes to believing individuals, I find Cenk and Diverbaz are always spot on      :)

Last time I ate in Calis was about 3 weeks ago at Shanghai Blues.
And before that a few times while family and friends were here during July & August.
Have to say the Beach House was surprisingly good, Varil is very good as is Curry Palace.
Mainly do the tourist strip when family & friends are here.

Never trust a food review which is written by a Brit.  ;D ;D ;D
Except a food review about fish & chips.

I didn't actually specify the places on Calis front...Like most locals only ate on the sea front when family and friends are out.. I think most of the meals are OK. but it wouldn't be my first choice of places to eat. Linda does get about the whole area and to places the tourists won't even have heard of...

The trouble with reviews is that you might have a good meal at one place on Tuesday so you go back on Friday and it is totally different. Hilary and I went to Meeting Point and had the worst couple of meals we have had in 20 years of visiting Turkey. My Albanian Liver was tough and dry and Hilary's salmon steak was burned till overcooked and leathery. The people on tables around us seemed happy enough with their food and I know that the restaurant gets (usually) great reviews on CBF and high votes in "Restaurant of the Year". But it only takes a minute or so for a chef to take his eye off the hob and a potentially good meal is spoiled. If we went there again we might have a very different opinion. We were asked how we enjoyed the meal and I said "It was horrible". We got 20% off the food bill - I wasn't in the mood to argue. The English couple on the next table said "Well done for saying something" as though they wouldn't have. I notice Turkish people aren't shy about saying when they aren't happy and don't use the mild terms that Brits might (no curate's egg reviews!).

We both enjoy Turkish food so more often than not we will go to one of the lokantas in Gunlukbasi or Fethyie.
There's not a lot of reviews for these places so usually we just pop in and give it a try,  If it's good, we return, if not then there are loads more to try.

If you want a no nonsense Turkish meal try Comert Lokantasi on the Gunlukbasi Road. They have branches in Dalyan, Ortaca and a couple of others. This evening we had one cous cous plate each plus one chicken fried in zucchini each then I had a chicken casserole and Gill had a meat ball casserole. Finally I had a kunefe for dessert and two bottles of water with free bread and free cay for 22.5 lira and it was authentic, very nice and best of all surrounded by Turkish people eating Turkish food

I did pay 22.5 lira though - always a factor that directly increases the pleasure of the experience :-)

Well that's an interesting question!

Whose reviews do you trust the most whittled down to those of three people  ???

That's encouraging!

I find Trip Advisor bun reliable it should be called Trip Advertiser.Anyone can and will post on there including the staff ,owners ,friends of owners etc to get their restaurant seen.it started out as a good idea that has gone on to make someone a bucket load of cash.Today if you look at the best  restaurant in Fethiye you will see that out of 350 Barbella in Calis is top,now it may be a niceish ,reasonably priced little place but come on !
I much prefer word of mouth, recommendation from friends or just look see and try.
By the way went to Samdan again last night which is far superior to Barbella,Samdan 140 on the list !
