Title: Restaruants in Kaya Village
Post by: sue mac on January 30, 2006, 12:14:50 PM
We were very lucky to be recommended the Levissi Wine House by a member of this forum, which we visited in September. What a beautiful setting, lovely food and excellent service.  We were also picked up from our accomodation and returned at the end of the night, which was great as there were 9 of us with children.  We have since heard that there is another restaurant in Kaya called the Istanbul, but are unable to find any information on this on the net. We have come across a little place called the Cin bal in Kaya, and wondered if anyone has any info on either of these restaurants.  Thanks[:o)]

The Istanbul is almost immediately opposite the entrance to the lower church. Its got a lovely open upstairs seating area, and Engin is very much the host with the most, and if theres lots of people will turn it into a party atmosphere and get people dancing.(evenings)
If you go in the daytime take swimming stuff as you will be able to use the pool.
Same next door at Muzzys Place, you can use the pool even if you only stop for a drink.
Cin Bal is very good, theres a good website telling about it's origins, Kebap Evi is similar with you being able to cook at your own barbeque, its a great experience, although a bit scary as everyone else is mostly Turkish and know what to order and what to do and us Brits stand out as a bit vague!
Also, if you go further down the village and turn right at the 'clocktower' keep walking, past Kayapark and ahead there is a small garden restaurant on a corner, can't remember what it was called, but fantastic food, and excellent value, and the pop up tooth pick dispensers keep the kids amused for hours ( I searched for weeks to find one on the net for my son afterwards!)
Anywhere in Kaya is fantastic, enjoy.

We ate at the Istanbul on our last visit in October and it was really good. The family were lovely, really attentive and helpful with info about the village. I understand that they too will offer rides back at night wherever feasible.
The pool was gorgeous and when we were there a family of 3 generations arrived to 'rest' and for the lad to go into the pool - Nan, mum and a boy of about 11/12 - a great little swimmer. I wondered KKOB if it was your family but was too shy to ask!
A super spot!

Dido,

No, it wasn't me, but the Istanbul is the only restaurant that we regularly use in Kayakoyu. You'll see some changes after May as Engin is going to re-locate the toilets and build a shop in their place.

I am so grateful for these hints and tips.  I love the sound of this place where you cook your own food.  Am really looking forward to going back in May.

Lance,

Yes, it is the Cin Bal. As you approach the village form Hisaronu it is sign-posted to your right. If you miss the first turning, continue for another 100 metres or so and there is a second turning.

Oba Kebab is further along on the right-hand side.

We went to the Istanbul Restaurant a few weeks ago.  It's well worth a visit just for their homemade bread!  It has a great atmosphere and the meal ended with a head and neck massage.  We will definitely be returning.

Istanbul restaurant in kaya has got to be one of our favourite places, not just to eat, but to chill out and absorb the beauty of Kaya. Engin is a great host, and always goes that extra mile to make your visit special. We've recommended the place to several friends who have been over on holiday and they have all raved about it. His prices are some of the cheapest we've come across, and the excellent food is often accomapanied with complimentary salad and fruit grown in his garden. The gozleme are fab! One word of advise, don't just go for a meal, go for the day !!

We went to the Istanbul the other week and it is a great place. Their pancakes with banana and honey had to be the best Turkish style pancakes I've had and I've sampled many!
Not many places where you go home with a bag of fruit and veg from their gardens!!

Sue, I don't know if they offer free pick up and return as standard but as the last Dolmus had gone they did offer to take us back which we gratefully accepted!  The dolmus will drop you off right outside the Istanbul so you won't have a problem finding it.

Engin doesn't offer a pick-up normally unless he already knows you well. However, I'm sure that if you make your own way there and mention to him that you need a lift back, he'll sort something out for you.

We love the Istanbul and had a fantastic birthday meal for my mother in law just three nights ago. Engin was on great form and every meal is great. My youngest loves playing with the dogs and the newest arrivals - three young kittens. Im not there this week but Engin is picking up the family from Fethiye during the afternoon one day and then driving them home again at night.

In  September.. we visited  two restaurants in Kaya...  the LEVISSI restaurant was  excellent, atmospheric and romantic .. great steaks to `die` for and the chill out music  just up my street !!!  go there.. well worth the trip !! expect to pay a little more than your average Calis or Hisaronu restaurant  but you wont be disappointed...  house wine starts at £9  per  bottle

On the other hand the POSIEDON restaurant Kaya ( resembles a tatty  greek beachside taverna )nothing against that...but they ripped us off with extremely  poor quality of food and charged us 95 lira for two,  with 30 lira for a bottle of  `house red` (  they tell you  there is no wine list,  thats their ploy )  avoid the  place like the plague    get the message  home to them  " rip us off and we stay away "  NOT recommendable in our opinion... the lamb chops my wife had you wouldnt give it to a dog !!

Last week we decided to head up to Kaya with the intention of finding somewhere to eat. We came across the Levissi Wine House and as it looked so beautiful from the outside we decided to try it.

Have to say it was fabulous. The welcome from the owners was great, we had a wine tasting before we sat down & a little tour of the place along with a bit of history about Kaya. Food was beautiful, there was live (but very tasteful!) music and the service was excellent.

We liked it so much we went back again on our last night. I would definitely recommend it.

Is there a dolmus to Kayakoy; we usually hire a car but aren't going to this time.

There is a dolmus from Hisaronu to Kaya village.
Or if you are going in the day time it is a lovely walk from Hisaronu to Kaya.

Dolmuses leave the Big Mosque in Fethiye every hour on the hour and go via Ovacik and Hisaronu to Kaya Koyu. The fare is 3 YTL per person.

That is good to know KKOB.  I watched a family go from Fethiye to Hisaronu then get another dolmus to Kaya and would have assumed that was the only way to do it.

Try Caspers restaurant by the clocktower. It is fairly new and owned by two english ladies. The food is excellent and very reasonable. Very friendly.

If you decide to go visit Casper's, which I can highly recommend, don't go looking for the clock tower on the roundabout island as it went walkabout around 6 weeks ago.  The nearest landmark would be the newest mosque where the Hisaronu, Fethiye and Gemiler roads meet.  :)
Has anyone any info regarding where the clock went to? [?]

Looking for a restaurant in Kaya next week to take my brother ( his first time to Turkey )  he wants to go somewhere where there is turkish music ( or live turkish music  etc.. )
Someone said the Istanbul is the place, can anyone confirm this please ?
My wife and I  have frequented the Levissi ( very nice ) but heard that the Istanbul has live music... is this true  and what  nights  please  ??

no live turkish music to my knowledge - KKOB will correct me if Im wrong! Kervansaray does a turkish night, with turkish dancing, bbq and free wine. Other than that, not sure of anywhere that will have live turkish music. Kaya winehouse is fabulous for a truly authentic and atmospheric night.

They have live bands at Karmylassos every Wednesday night. That's the new place on the bends by Muzzy's and the Istanbul. It's Turkish music, but modern rock and pop stuff, not traditional.

The only time that the Istanbul has live music, to my knowledge, is when there's a wedding being held there.

Karvansary is your best bet for live Turkish music. Plus, if you book through an agent, you can get free transport arranged.

thanks for the info  KKOB   and SueMac, but I`m really looking for `traditional` turkish music rather than  modern turkish rock.
Plenty of that  at the Turk bar in Hisaronu  :-)

Yes  we  went to the  turkish night show in  kaya  in May this year... 6 of us went   enjoyed the  buffet, and the  wine was surprisingly nice and not `plonk`
The show we  thoroughly enjoyed ( us men particularly the  belly dancer ) but we all got `turned off` ( even the ladies present ) by the male belly dancer  :-(   sorry but that act went on too long, and I personally  couldnt watch it,  and neither could our wives... I dont like drag acts personally, and thats how it appeared...  spoilt what was a  very good show

haha. have to disagree there - found that belly dancer enthralling to say the least! Apparantly there is a bar in fethiye called the Melodi bar that has live "haunting" music, on a wednesday night. Never been myself, just read about it on here but I keep meaning to try it.  If there are any other recommendations for live turkish music, please let us know. thanks
