No matter how carefully we cut off the tin can and keep the rootball whole before planting the leaves and flowers die off within days and the plant never seems to recover - at best producing a few small leaves the following year. Anyone know what we are doing wrong or how to prune to produce growth and flowers? At least we have the consolation of looking at a particularly fine specimen in our neighbours garden

Sounds like you've got a problem with your soil.

Buy another one and keep it in it's tin. You can always surround the tin with wood or stone, or drop it in a large pot to disguise it. It'll also help to stop the tin conducting heat from direct sunlight and cooking the roots.

In Kaya we can only grow the purple ones. The others are killed by the winter frosts. In the spring we wait for the first new shoots to appear and then cut back all the dead wood to the fresh growth.

Belatedly thanks for the advice. The soil I do not believe to be a problem as it supports abundant growth of other flowers shrubs and fruit trees - it gets fertilized with goat droppings every year. We too have successfully kept a number of plants in their containers and disguised them in the way suggested so I'll probably take your advice and leave the nextone in its tin can.

i have just planted one it was great in the tin not dropped a flower head
then planted in the ground and it looks dead but dont worry
its just a shock to the roots system, it will grown again later.(fingers crossed).
