We'll gather lilacs .......
« on: July 04, 2011, 09:53:15 AM »
Lilacs are in full bloom here in the UK at the moment, and the scent is lovely, so much so that the Present Mrs Tickets would like to include a lilac in our turkish garden - to accompany the jasmime.

We like to see our garden looking nice, but do not have great gardening knowledge, both here in the UK and in Turkey.  So do lilacs grow well in Turkey? Do they require a lot of care? And can we buy them locally from the local garden markets in and around Fethiye?

History:
Lilacs in the United States date back to the mid 1750's. They were grown in America's first botanical gardens and were popular in New England. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew them in their gardens. Lilac bushes can live for hundreds of years, so a bush planted at that time may still be around. Lilacs originated from Europe and Asia, with the majority of natural varieties coming from Asia. In Europe, lilacs came from the Balkans, France and Turkey.

Thanks everyone, looks like a visit to the garden centre is in order next time we are over in September.  Thinking about one of each colour white, yellow and lilac, it'll look and smell splendid over the years. :)

Can they only be bought in certain garden centres or do most garden centres have them?  What is the Turkish word for the Lilac? Thanks!
