Yes I have tried it, but with smaller bowls and with less success than the bloke in the video.

I've never cooked anything that needs a whole garlic or even close to a whole one  :)

Well, once it's peeled you don't have to use it all at once. Put it in a jar full of olive oil and, not only will it keep for ages, but it'll also give you some garlic flavoured oil for cooking or dressings.
