Different Daff's
« on: March 05, 2013, 14:08:56 PM »
Three diferent types of daffs blooming at once. The first time since planting two -  three years ago.

The standard ones have bloomed early and already died off.

The mimi daffs are great.

Summer is coming.

I used to have a customer in Wales who grew daffodils and was an avid collector of any china that had daffodils. He told me that there where over 12,000 different types of daffodils and he loved old china to try and discover what  kind of daffodil was being grown or was popular going back over the years.  I was amazed there were so many kinds of daffodils.
He also told me never to put cut daffodils in water with other flowers as daffodils give off a poison into the water that will kill any other flower.

You are very knowledgable Jacqui, these things are useful to know. I thought of you when I added few drops of bleach to my daughters flowers for Mother's Day!

According to the Classic Daffodils website there are over 30,000 varieties of daffodils registered and probably as many as that again that haven't been registered.

My Welsh customer was a commercial grower and told me he grew only 2,000 varieties of Daffs.
The "Bleach thing" is, when you have a bunch of cut flowers put a few drops of bleach in the water and it keeps the flowers for longer, as the bleach stops the bacteria forming in the water.  This is something that Florist do.  When I buy flowers from the guy in Calis who comes around the restaurants. I always add some bleach, as in a hot climate the water does not keep good for long without it

Seriously they definitely last longer with those few drops of bleach. Great tip.
