We had our garden lawns taken up and stones put down.  The workmen put down very thick clear plastic, that came in big rolls.
It has been down a few years now and seems to be fine.

Yes, the black fabric is available. It's quite expensive compared to the clear platic mentioned by Jaqui though. Provided it doesn't have too much traffic over it, the clear plastic will be good fro several years.

I back up what both Jacqui & Alan say re. the heavy plastic sheeting, we had the same on our garden for over 5 years, with nothing coming up through, until new Turkish neighbours " stole " our entire garden,  >:(  & removed the plastic, & the stones , & sold them !!  :o  Plastic all the way !!

Currently a large part of the garden is white plastic topped by stones (perhaps from your place Gorden)
We're not sure how long it's been down , but triffids are popping up everywhere. Also the soil directly underneath it is a very dry clay which needs moisture. It's helps friendly worms wander about and aerate the soil

we have started to plant within the stones and want to replace the White plastic as we go along. We feel the black fabric is better for the soil as it's more porous. Also, no light, no weeds
