How about Verbascum thapsus (Common Mullein). If I look out of my front window I can see a couple across the road in my neighbour's garden where the soil had been disturbed in the Spring by Virgin Media digging a trench to lay cable. They are about 7ft high.

Should have said Spring 2015 since it is a biennial plant.

I have 2 of these growing in my back garden,i also wondered what they are,look a bit like yellow fox gloves,we have recently disturbed the soil in that area,we are building a wall,know they aren't red hot pokers,we have those .

Good to know that each plant produces about a quarter of a million seeds and that they can survive in the soil for up to 100 years. Oh well, they're good for bees and butterflies apparently.

Yes, we thought at first that they were foxgloves until they just kept on getting taller and the flower spikes appeared.
