Title: On Thursday I Retire
Post by: teresa321 on August 27, 2006, 12:44:34 PM
A bit strange really but I am retiring on Thursday and it will be 4 weeks to the day that we move to Calis.

I am a bit scared at the moment at the prospect of being jobless for the first time since leaving school but I am also excited at the prospect of starting our new life abroad.

It is slowly creeping up but very slowly and piece by piece everything is coming together.

People are telling me I will miss work and a couple of years ago I might have agreed but now I don't think I will.  I have said a couple of goodbyes and last week a few of us had a pub lunch and I got a few bon voyage cards which brought it home a bit more.

Although I have 4 weeks to go I would like to thank this forum for giving us the courage to actually go for it. There were not many members and even fewer estate agents in Calis at the time we bought and the information we gained and the support was fantastic.

So from Friday I can get up when I want and not leave the house at 6am.  I will not have to drive over an hour each to work to a place where a decision takes 6 months and goes through so many management levels that no-one can remember what it was they wanted or they have decided it is now out of date and they don't need it.

4 weeks to sort out all the odds and ends and get rid of house contents and we are al raring to go.  Thanks for the e-mails and I will be seeing some of you soon.  I am more concerned about the technical side of setting up in Turkey than anything else.  Mobiles and e-mails will do me in.[xx(]

Good Luck Teresa.  Have a great retirement and enjoy.  Most retired people I know, don't know how they found the time to go to work, so sounds like you'll be very busy!

Good luck and congratulations Teresa, we haven't regreted the move and enjoying every moment of it.

I remember D Day very well, the only problem I was having was leaving some very special friends and family. But we still keep in touch and they have already popped over for a "cheap holiday".:D

Good luck Teresa! I'm sure that you will love every minute of your retirement and your new life in Calis! People keep saying to me that I will miss work when I finish - but its usually people who have a long way to go before they can leave so perhaps its a bit of the green eyed monster. ;)Just think about those sun filled days sitting on your roof terrace! Hope the move goes smoothly,we will be in Calis at the time of your move so hope to see you then.

I retired 2 years ago, at the ripe old age of 51, and moved out here. I haven't regretted it at all. (Despite several visits from the Jandarma and a court appearance on Boxing Day 2005. But, mustn't go Off Topic! LOL)

Tresa,

I retired on April 7th this year (under different circumsatances due to my health) but it is the best thing ever!!  I'm now actually working harder than before but it's for me and when I want! The stress has gone completely.

Have a great time in Calis and savour every day as if it were your last! I just wish I could convince my better half to take the plunge as well.

Enjoy your retirement here.....and watch the stress levels melt away.
Don't wory about little technical things-they all get sorted-maybe in Turkish Time, but before long you won't worry about them and help is never far away :)

Thank you all very much. I must say Dippey that I actually bought a diary as so many family members and friends are planning to visit next year that if only a quarter turn up we will be running a B&B most of the time.

None of them have been to Turkey before so their eyes will probably be opened.

Thanks again

Oops sorry Teresa (and indeed Mick), I missed this somehow  :-\

All the very best for your new life - I know how much you love Turkey and you'll not regret it. It is strange selling up and moving to a completely different country and way of life, but once you get past the "what the hell are we doing" stage and the "oh my god we are here" stage, it all falls into place.

I hope so - because I went through a "what the hell are we doing" 10 minutes yesterday (too much time on a bank holiday for thinking).

We are really looking forward to it - see you soon.

Enjoy your retirement Teresa...Is Mick retiring too
I am sure you will not regret the move. we have been here for a few months now and we are settling in good.
Remember there are plenty of internet cafes here with web cams etc to keep in touch with the UK unless you have a phone already installed.
all the best

Thanks again.

Mick retired 2 years ago and settled into his new role very easily as I continued working.  However I am now officially finished - not sure if I feel retired or unemployed but none the less we cannot wait to get there now.

We will be relying on internet cafes Tel as we do not have a phone line yet. We will apply for residency as soon as we arrive and take it from there but I think it takes a while doesn't it?

Teresa - my hunch is that you are retiring young enough to really enjoy it and young enough to face the challenge. It is a bit brave but not foolish to up sticks. Just think; someone was first to the moon and they coped. You must be both doing it because you both like to romance. I admire you both and really hope it works out for you. Stuart

Teresa  & Mick
We are waiting 7-10 days for a phone line only.  Depends on if you have an exchange nearby.
Without residency an obliging Turkish friend could get one in his name for you. transfer later.
Residency could be a couple of months or more unless you go fasttrack. then only 3-4 weeks
Good luck

Thanks Tel. We actually have existing phone lines in the house from the previous owner. We have got a friend who said they could connect us without a problem and we may look at this again whem we get over.

How do you fast track residency?

Hi again
You pay more for fast track obviously. which will cost you approx 250-300 Ytl more than the usual fee guys.
If you are not in any hurry then during your 90 day visa..you SHOULD make it.
best wishes

Good Luck Teresa.  We retired early and have been living our dream in Calis for the last 18months.  Have no regrets whatsoever.  You will now be able to do all the things you never had time for when you were working.

Don't look at it as retirement just a new chapter in your life.  There's always charity work if the withdrawal symptoms for work get that bad.

Thanks for your support. We made it and we have been here for 7 weeks now.  Time passes beautifully and we are so chilled we could just fall out of the tree.  Have not missed work one jot since leaving and it may be early days but we have no regrets at all.

We applied for residency fairly quickly and did not fast track because it costs enough already and we were not in a hurry.  I was surprised when I saw the residency "passport". I expected a rubber stamp mark in my UK passport and perhaps a piece of paper.

Hi Teresa :)
We would just like to say enjoy your retirement in Calis you wont regret it from what people have said on this site. We hope to retire over in Calis but not for a while yet, I have only got 5 years to go but I have to wait for Andy but I intend to get everything paid here for when he is 55 so he can retire early, then we can both come and live our dream in our place in Calis. For now we have to just have regular visits. Once again enjoy yourselves and lap up every moment you have done the right thing and remember the family are only a phonecall away or a flight away which they will enjoy comeing to see you on a free holiday :D
