Post by: mercury on October 31, 2006, 21:18:10 PM
Our house is finally on the market in England but that is the easy bit. It is going to be very traumatic getting rid of all our junk Sorry treasured possesions. Any advice? Anne x

car boot sales, should get rid of a few items or have a open house with everything you want to sell with a price on it

Tried the car boot sales for my treasured possessions (junk). It's hard Anne. I don't know where they go to in the boot sales on TV but people around here want to pay between 10p & £1 for everything.
Brand new Jaeger suit, still in polythene with tags £270 in sale (ballooned in weight just after buying). I was asking £5 & told 'You can't expect to sell at those prices!'
Treasured ornaments, household items eg. bedding still in wrappers - unless you're prepared to sell for 5-10% of original cost - give them to a charity shop as otherwise it'll break your heart letting them go for so little. The charity shops will sell them for little but you won't be there to see it & it'll do them some good.
Ebay - trouble is it takes so long to list & then you have to package up to send off BUT you might make money on some items. Check completed listings & see if it's worthwhile.
Friends & Family - give them pickings.

I'm great at giving advice - but useless at clearing my own. I'm also the worlds best at procrastination.
Thinking of cash converters - anyone tried them?
Linda

What about ads in local newspaper and supermarkets and sell things in job lots---books, video/dvds, ornaments, bedding, kitchen and so on.
Also is there any good quality second hand clothing shops in your area that will sell for you on a commission basis.

put things small enough to post on ebay, you will usually get a lot more money for items than at a car boot sale.
you can also put larger items on ebay but put as collection only

Try  for some courier prices to ship out your special items or maybe even the good old post office. You could also consider excess baggage or perhaps offer a couple of friends a free weeks holiday providing their baggage allowance is "yours".  Travel scheduled and baggage allowance is even more. After downsizing and a massive clearout we shipped everything else as we could not just walk away from a lifetimes memories....we are glad we didn't. :)

We made approx £3k selling our cr&p on Ebay, and I still can't belive what people buy (including me for buying it in the first place).
Selling your house to completion should take about 6-8 weeks if the market allows and subject to chains and all that stuff.
If you set up Ebay account now and sale on 7days with paypal account you should shift a lot.

We also did boot sales, but found the outdoors ones stopped in autumn, i.e now, and start again in April. But we did find some indoor boot sales.

Forgot this bit, when you sell on Ebay make sure you weight the goods with packaging, or if weighing without add 15% on for packing materials and petrol to the post office and cark park charges.

Goodluck.

We agree with Dippey...ebay is great as long as you have a pay pal account and allow for weight of packaging in your p & P quote. We also add about 5% on top of this to cover ebays fees  ;)
Large items get courier quotes or sell as collection only.
You can get full pricing guides from PO and make sure you state that the postage costs are UK only , all other countries to contact you for a quote.
You'll be suprised what people will buy and you'll get more than at a car boot where the punters do not want to spend much and you'll end up selling items for peanuts.
Good luck

Ditto Heather.  However, try ebay.  I know it can take forever to list, but for those more expensive items you'll probably get more than at a car boot sale. A friend and I were offered some new shoes which hadn't been sold at a retail outlet and we've listed and sold them on ebay and made a little profit.  It can be a bit of a pain checking everyday for any queries and posting, but when the cash rolls in it's worth it.  Just think, you'll be able to buy more 'treasured' items when you move with the money!!

We sold loads of stuff by using the local paper.  Did it all on-line using free adds so it didn't cost a penny and the few items that didn't sell from the first advert I just re-listed until it did.

Also used ebay and did a car boot - what didn't sell gave to charity shops or dumped it!

The thought of getting rid of it all was worse than actually doing it.

Good luck with your sale, it will all be worth it.

Thank you to everyone who replied. We made a start this afternoon taking a few thing to a charity shop. We have spoken to a few vultures (sorry) friends and family who are willing to take anything of any value of our hands. Free of course. I am going to have a go at e.bay. Car boots around here are finished but we had one in the summer. Talk about tight!! I thought we were going to have to pay people to take my stuff away. lol. I just took the whole lot to Oxfam in a mad hig. (temper) for all U not from Yorkshire. I will let you all know how I get on. Anne

Hi, there is a site called Freecycle where I've given items away- the person who wants the item has to collect it. I know you don't get any cash-just a warm glow for helping a stranger out. Remember, your the luck ones, off to a new life in Turkey.

Thanks for the e.bay advice guys. We have been selling on there all week and are doing absolutley great. I didn't know we had such bounty!!! Trouble is it is addictive and I am eyeing everything up now as a possible selling item. I loaded my car up with things for the hospice shop but as I stopped outside my mum's for 5 mins, 3 of her neighbours relieved me of half of it.(I took donations off them for the shop). Most of our furniture etc. is spoken for. It is going to family. Free of course. It is amazing how much junk we have accumulated over the years as "maybe this will come in handy sometime" but of course it never does. The garage has never looked as good. Just need the sale to go through now then whoopee we are coming to Fethiye. Haven't been as excited as this for years. Anne

We did two boot sales before we came and raised 120pounds.  It wad a lot of hard work and we still had loads left.  Luckily a neighbour who was an ardent booter bought the rest of our stuff of 50 pounds.  Was were just glad to get rid of it.

Our furniture we put in the local free papers and it all went.  Even stuff we put out in the front garden for collection by the local council was snapped up.  People kept knocking on the front door and asking if it was for sale.

Small items we couldn't bear to part with we boxed up and sent by Royal Mail-cost 140 pounds. Beware though we think customs went thru it with a machette cos some china/glass items were broken.  As we paid insurance we contacted Royal Mail and they said they don't insure glass and china.  We obviously didn't read the small print.

It will all come right in the end and we wish you good luck.  It will worth it in the end.
