Does anyone know how to link a laptop to a printer, the printer is linked to my son's computer is this possible to do? thanks for any help ;)

Have you got the CD that came with the printer? The CD will contain the necessary software for the printer.
Just insert the CD into your laptop and follow the instructions that come up on the screen.
Make sure you have the printer cable to hand.

Usually connect via a USB cable directly to the printer. You didnt say what operating system though - If you switch the printer on and connect usb to lappy then XP and Win 7 should pick it straight up and install the drivers for you.

Unless they are old kit (three years or more) printers and laptops nowadays have the abiliity to connect wirelessly built in. Go to "Network Connection" (you may have to look for this in Control Panel) and then choose "Add printer to network" and follow the instructions. Handy if you don't have a cable to connect them or if it's not long enough. Otherwise as ScreamLead advises, just connect the printer via the USB port and let Windows find it and configure it (known as "Plug and Play" ;). Unless it's an obscure make of printer Windows will have a driver for it.
