Super Optimizer
« on: April 19, 2015, 13:37:29 PM »
I inadvertently acquired this nasty little beast this week. I imagine it piggy-backed on another program. I have uninstalled everything I downloaded this week, including cleaning up the left-over bits after initial uninstall. I can find no trace of this program on my PC. Nevertheless, it reappears whenever I boot up. It starts to scan my PC and, if I don't catch it in time, then demands money to clear up the things it claims to have found. Irritating. Any ideas?

The problem is that Super Optimizer doesn't appear in the program list so I can't uninstall it.

Try the free version of crapcleaner   https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download  It usually gets rid of most stuff I find.

Ok.  Let me look into it a bit more and see what I can find.

What operating system are you using?  If its Windows, is there a folder in Program Files (or Program Files (x86)) called "Super Optimizer"?

Some slow progress. I have found the little beastie; as you said it was hiding in Program Files. But it is a resistant strain. I tried to send it to recycle bin but got message that I didn't have the necessary permission for that. So I tried to shred it (with Advance SystemCare and with Tune-up) but got messages that Super Optimizer/SupOpt Smart Scan.exe is in use - despite everything being closed.

Press Ctl, Alt Del and start Task Manager.  Look down the list of Processes for Super Optimizer and if its obvious, highlight it then click end task.

Alternatively, you can stop it starting up in the first instance.  What version of Windows are you using?

Excellent John. That cracked it. Program shredded and empty folder despatched to Recycle Bin and cleared.
