Getting Rid of PC
« on: April 07, 2013, 11:46:59 AM »
My old desktop PC is now so slow that I have decided to get rid of it. I haven't got rid of one before so I'd like to know what security precautions to take. It has all my banking and other financial details on there and I remember someone telling me that just deleting them does not completely rid the PC of all traces. I have also heard that I should remove the hard disk and break it with a hammer.

My guess is that it refers to something that was illegal in the UK until 1967.

Erasing a hard drive generally doesn't do that, it just tells the computer not to bother looking in those areas anymore. So the info is still there.

hammer a masonary nail through the hard drive mid way between the outside and the hub and then chuck it in a river. No-one will ever be able to use that nail ever again :D

Blimey, the solutions are getting increasingly drastic. Perhaps that nice Mr Kim will drop a nuke on it for me.
