Title: wheelchair users on flights.
Post by: mary62 on July 27, 2017, 14:25:13 PM
I flew back from Dalaman this week with my disabled friend (wheelchair user). When we boarded the flight (before the rest of the travellers) there were 3 disabled passengers. Fine you might think......until arriving at Manchester. one of 'the disabled' passengers legs 'were magically cured' and she was one of the first passengers off the plane!!
Outrageous behaviour.....literally taking the wee....and it does give REAL disabled passengers a bad name.

Yes, we have noticed people who board the plane by wheel chair miraculously recover during the flight and rather than wait in their seats for assistance ie get off last,  they are able to walk off like the rest of the passengers.   Obviously there are a lot of genuine wheel chair users that need the assistance they get but the service e is abused by some.   When we were in Malaga airport people from our hotel had wheel chair assistance, and they were dancing the night away on the dance floor the night before.

Surely it's up to the cabin staff to have a word and/or report the passenger to their head office with a view to retrospective action being taken against said passenger.

I expect that when they got home they claimed against the hotel for incapacitating them with food poisoning.

I met some friends off their flight into Dalaman earlier this season. I had to wait a while for them & was shocked at not just the number of wheelchair assisted passengers coming out of the terminal, but also the ages of most of them, which was in the 30 - 40ish range. Quite honestly most of them looked liked the walk would have done them good   ;)

Last year we were waiting to board and where in a queque.  There was an elderly couple in front of us both with walking sticks. Next thing we were all told to move back as someone in a wheelchair was being pushed along, behind them were 5 members of their family.  Then this happened again another wheelchair with 3 family members.  The elderly man remarked to us, it was fair enough for people with wheelchair getting on first, but why all their family too?   During the flight both wheelchair users where up and down to the loo walking just fine and also in the queue to get off the plane when we landed.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour, some people have no shame. My dad who is 92 and disabled complains time and time again about people parking in disabled bays when they are not! When he has questioned them he's just got abuse. What's the world coming too  : :)

In previous times when there were no seat allocations on Easyjet, there was no chaos in any airport that came close to the "Dalaman scrum" - people slowly migrating towards the gate in anticipation of the flight boarding being called, and creating a messy huddle of humans.

Now back then, there were far more people needing wheelchair assistance. Strange as I often spotted them either at the pool earlier in the week looking quite nimble, or back at the UK airport going at some pace to get to the busses and car parks.

No - my first thought would be to make sure their next flight was full of screaming wee yins.

My mom may be one of the passengers viewed by some as abusing this system, let me explain, she is a COPD suffer and although can walk she can not walk long distances as she gets too breathless.
I always book wheelchair assistance in from the UK airport to Dalaman because we dont know how far we will be from the gate number, but because we know Dalaman arrival procedure and because its a small airport it is within her walking range so we do not require one on arrival.
On return to the UK we again book a wheelchair because we are usaly dumped on the runway miles from passport control....and she yes she can even manage a gentle swim in the pool.
Also please remember not all special assistance passengers have visual disabilties and may of been allowed to board the aircraft earlier for other reasons they may not be obvious to you.
Shame on those that are abusing the system, but more shame on those who show ignorance to unkown circumstances.

Totally agree with your comments MarKar

I was diagnosed with moderate to severe COPD in November last year. Thankfully after a number of changes to my prescription it is currently under some control.
I had requested assistance on last two visits to Turkey but was able to walk ( without aid) on the return leg of the last visit so the assistance was cancelled.

A very useful service and appreciated...but it must be difficult at times to know if the user is in genuine need or actually abusing the system.

Dave.

Trust me guys, the people I was referring to had no problems in walking long distances or anything else of a physical nature.

Hi Faymoore dave,
agree we would really struggle without this service, but we have also been let down by it too, we have landed in the UK and no assistance turned up, the airstewards were left to go and fetch her a wheelchair for her.
There is normally 5 in our party including our 2 children so its usual to let us all stay together.
On another note dave my mom takes NAC 600 recommended in turkey for her COPD its like a vitamin it helps build up your immune system and breaks down muccus...she recommends it.

Keith, I'm sure like many things in life unfortunately there is always someone that will abuse the system.

Why does someone in a wheelchair need five people to accompany them onto the plane before anyone else?  Surely, one person would be enough, as the wheelchair is pushed by a member of airport staff.

I remember a post from years ago about the disabled man on a flight to Dalaman who left the airport in a wheelchair. He was next spotted at a concert in Calis dancing on stage to Elvis's  'Hunk a hunk of
Burning love ' ;D

Because Jacqui we travel as a family of 5 including 2 children and 1 disabled OAP who is entitled to have someone with her (usually me) that leaves my husband to manage the rest of the families hand luggage and the children!.
I applaud the airline for anything they can do to make our already stressful journey run as smoothly as possible and not all airports have enough OCS staff to assist with wheelchair users....just be thankful that your not in the position to need this service, I wish we weren't.

You have my sympathy puma. It can be a hell of a long walk when you get into Manchester sometimes. I know I used to struggle with that walk before I had my knee replacement last year. Should really have had some assistance then.

Despite Barrie's walking problems (stroke) he has limited vision and wears two hearing aids. From about 5 years into his disability he started refusing to use a wheelchair due to the comments he used to get at the airport. (he was then quite young) and healthy looking. The stress for me watching him at the airport was awful and the walk to the terminals was a nightmare for him.   I should add that his balance is very bad.. Last year arriving at Manchester airport.. we struggled a long way to passport control...and I lost sight of him due to the crush of people.. I overheard a man saying "that knob head disabled bloke got in my way"... His mate said "but you pushed him into the wall over there trying to get past.. Barrie was on the floor.. I was 2 lines away fro this man otherwise I would have given him a "right mouthful"   I was furious. Barrie was just so embarrased Since then Barrie has lost his confidence at the airport and we now always use a wheelchair... He hates it... but he can be seen swimming in the pool and walking to the bars in Calis. (holding me).

How awful for you both mercury. Unfortunately it's the people who abuse the system who make it hard for those who need it.  :(

I noticed at Bristol airport that children's pushchair looking trollies that could fit it 2 children and wheelchairs were placed every so often along the long walk back to passport control, thought this was a great idea that other airports should use, never seen them in Birmingham airport.

Similarly with Motability cars. There has been so much abuse of the system in the past and, now that they're cracking down on it, it makes it very difficult even for those that need a car to qualify.
