Title: Driving Test for the over 70s.
Post by: Daffodil on December 24, 2015, 21:23:16 PM
I have heard of so many accidents involving elderly people losing control in towns I would be more than happy to re-take a driving test every few years as I age.
An elderly couple in a very powerful car drove straight through a stone wall on a bridge in the middle of the town near to my home and luckily no one was walking across the bridge at the time. The elderly couple also survived. Now today we have the car going into Costa Coffee window in Westerham. I could speak of more driving incidents involving aging drivers which I have known of or experienced personally.
Who thinks that action has to be taken now about the aging drivers on the road?

An interesting article here regarding age related accident statistics. It's a bit of a sweeping statement suggesting that older people are more at risk of car accidents than anyone else. Perhaps everyone should take a test every 3 years not just older people as you suggest?

I bet the majority of us "older" drivers would fail a modern driving test.

Correct, the things my son could do in his test that we could not do surprised me.

I think we should all have a refresher test.

I think as soon as a man gets old enough to decide to wear a flat cap when driving, his licence should be cancelled.

I don't think a flat cap would hinder your driving,
You can wear it back to front like a baseball cap, haha.
Merry Christmas to all.

Where can I get one of those baseball caps with the peak on the back. I've searched all over for them ? Innit.

Most of the stupidity I witness on the roads is performed by stupid stunts under the 30yr old age group.

Sorting these out would be a good starting point to improve safety on the roads. I'd bet my pension on it.    :)

I find a lot of accidents caused by older people are because they have taken ill. A test wouln't prevent that. Obviously the older a person is the higher the risk I suppose. What to do?

I find a lot of them are caused by old people pĂssing everyone off by driving at 20 mph or pulling out into oncoming motorbikes. What to do? Full retest every 2 years or licence revoked.

When you get to 70 you have to renew your license every 3 years. At 70 you have the option of keeping your full entitlement with a medical or being restricted to driving vehicles up to 3500kg without a medical. As my motorhome was under 3500kg when I reached 70 I never bothered with the medical. So for the last 12 years I just signed that I had no problems.

Personally I would like to see everybody have a medical and get an eyesight test every time they renew the over 70 license. I've noticed over the years my observation and anticipation is nowhere as good as it was, I know this but many drivers don't.

I am puzzled as to why so many incidents involving elderly people are in the centre of towns. They usually are situations where the driver has mounted the pavement at speed or gone the wrong way up a one way street. Two young women were knocked down in Colchester a couple of years ago by an 87 year old driver who mounted the pavement and there was another incident somewhere where a driver kiiled someone on the pavement. What happens when they are in town to make them react so badly?

I think reactions/panic are a lot to do with the incidents in town centres. I've heard engines screaming away when people are trying manoeuvre in confined areas, if their foot slips off the clutch the vehicle will take off like a rocket. An elderly person will have very little chance reacting to the situation quickly.

Looking at the costa coffee incident it might have been the vehicle was going too fast for the driver  to turn the steering wheel to get round the corner and they just panicked and their foot froze on the accelerator. .Just my opinion of course.

"The Department for Transport (DfT) says there is no evidence older drivers are more likely to cause an accident, and it has no plans to restrict licensing or mandate extra training on the basis of age ...

... Research by the RAC Foundation suggests drivers aged 75 and over make up 6% of all licence holders but account for just 4.3% of all deaths and serious injuries. By contrast, drivers aged 16-20 make up just 2.5% of all drivers but 13% of those killed and seriously injured."

Maybe the oldies do have as many accidents out of towns but because they just end up in a ditch or something rather than mount the kerb in a town its just not reported?

It is well known that most of the world's accidents, wars, epidemics, pestilences, and other assorted malevolences are caused by middle-aged men. The peak being 49 years old: a very dangerous age for a male. How old was Hitler when he invaded Prague and triggered World War Two? 49!

My uncle Albert was 108 when he invaded the Chemist's and nicked a box of Viagra, dirty ol' git. He probably had a few "accident's".    :)

But how old was Stalin when he launched the Purges in the Soviet Union and installed his Terror? 49! And Mao Zedong when he became Chairman of the Central Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party? 49!

But Hilary was 49 for three years in a row.
