what coins are in current use
« on: March 10, 2015, 10:40:16 AM »
I have been coming to turkey for many years, in the man drawer I have found lots of old Turkish coins left over from previous holidays. This year I have determined to bring them out and spend them. I know some coins are no longer accepted.  So my question is what denomimations of coins are currently in circulation.

It's not so much the denomination these days. It's more about the date of issue and design.

I think these are the current ones.

I have three what looks like 100,000 lira coins.

Are they still legal currency.

No, but if you take them to the Ziraat Bankasi they'll change them for a coffee machine token..

I cannot remember which year I have them from. Can't be from the first few years because we didn't get coins in change. We always got sweets  :)

Ungraciously and disrespectfully, we used to refer to the coinage as shrapnel :-[ :-[ :-[

Don't bother with the 1 kurus coins (bottom right in KKOB's post), shops don't seem to either have them or want them  :(

Any coins with Yeni Lira or Yeni Kurus on them are also no longer legal tender.
